The Mumbai Indians franchise is currently without its head coach. Earlier on Saturday, former Sri Lanka captain and legendary batter Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as head coach of the team, doing so mere weeks before the upcoming IPL 2027 auction.

With Jayawardene stepping down from the role, several reports indicated that former Indian captain and World Cup winning coach Rahul Dravid might replace the outbound Sri Lankan for next year’s IPL 2027 season. However, it is believed that Dravid will not become Mumbai Indians coach after all owing to some very specific reasons.

Why is Rahul Dravid not interested in becoming MI coach?

As reported by Cricbuzz, Rahul Dravid has expressed his disinterest in taking up a coaching gig. The former Indian cricketer has reportedly ruled himself out, at least for another season.

It is worth noting that Dravid also stepped down as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals franchise prior to the IPL 2026 season earlier this year, prompting the Royals management to rope in former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara for the high-profile gig.

It now appears that Dravid is still not keen to take another coaching job, as he wants “to focus on his family and sons Samit and Anvay”.

It is worth noting that both Samit Dravid and Anvay Dravid are young aspiring Indian cricketers currently playing in junior domestic cricket tournaments.

The report states that Rahul Dravid was already flooded with several IPL coaching offers after he left the Rajasthan Royals franchise itself. While he is also resisting Mumbai Indians coaching gig at the moment, the cricketer-turned-coach might return to the fold at some stage after the IPL 2027 season next year.

Rahul Dravid record as coach

India’s all-time batting great Rahul Dravid holds a stellar career as coach. He was the head coach of the India U19 team that won the U19 World Cup 2018. Under his guidance, the team also reached the final of the 2016 ICC U19 World Cup.

He has also mentored the Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals franchises in the IPL.

In late-2021, Dravid was named as head coach of the Indian cricket team, a role he served up until mid-2024. During his tenure, the Indian team won the 2023 Asia Cup, reached the final of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and lifted the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

For now, however, Mumbai Indians will have to look elsewhere for Mahela Jayawardene’s successor, with Dravid seemingly in no rush to return to the coaching circuit.
