US Entrepreneur Sanay Govil Confirms BBL Ambition [Source: AFP]
As the Big Bash League (BBL) gets privatised, an Indian origin USA entrepreneur, Sanjay Govil, has expressed his interest in buying a team. He has set his sights on buying full stakes in teams like Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes.
After months of deliberation, Cricket Australia green-lighted the BBL privatisation plan earlier this year. This would mean that private investors from across the world can acquire 50 to 100% stakes in any team of their choice.

Notably, the BBL privatisation process has already begun with Cricket Victoria sending invites for the sale of Melbourne Renegades. Amid this, USA entrepreneur Sanjay Govil has expressed his interest in buying stakes in a BBL team.
Govil, who owns Washington Freedom in MLC and Welsh Fire in The Hundred, is looking to expand his T20 league portfolio. While speaking to Cricinfo, Sanjay confirmed that he is willing to go all out and buy 100% stakes if given an opportunity.
"I'm interested in the Renegades; it's on the radar. But I think there are going to be a lot of big players who will be interested. I'm not just looking to be an investor. I love actively managing teams. The teams I have...I have at least a 50% or 100% stake. The one thing I know is if you have two data points and you connect them, it's always a straight line." Govil said.
While Melbourne Renegades is a good team, Sanjay Govil has set his eyes on Hobart Hurricanes. Several players associated with Hurricanes also play for Washington in the MLC.
"(Hurricanes)... that's our size of team. If you look at the Welsh Fire and Freedom, we have sort of smaller franchises compared to others," said Montreal-born Govil, who grew up in India before making his fortune in the US. There are the big boys who want to go after the big teams. I love Hobart; they are a winning team. We can make more impact in those teams,” he added.
Additionally, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who serves as Hurricanes' head of strategy, has coached Washington Freedom for the past three seasons. Hence, due to these connections, Govil wants to invest in Hobart Hurricanes.
Sanjay Govil’s T20 League portfolio
Notably, Sanjay Govil’s first major investment in professional cricket happened in 2023 when he bought Washington Freedom in MLC. He owns a 100% stake in that franchise and is actively involved in its operations, including releasing funds for the Freedom's cricket ground redevelopment in Frederick.
Also, Govil secured an initial 49% stake in Welsh Fire during The Hundred’s sale in 2025. However, he later upped his bid to 50%, and the other 50% is held by Glamorgan Cricket.
Now, Sanjay Govil wants to expand to the BBL. He is passionate about the sport and has promised to give his 100% effort to the franchise that he manages to buy in the coming months.
