Aiden Markram is set to play South Africa’s all-important second Test of the three-match series against Australia. Earlier, several concerns were raised regarding his availability considering the legendary Proteas batter did not travel from Durban to Gqeberha with the rest of the squad.
The cricketer also missed South Africa’s training sessions at the St George's Park Cricket Ground this week as he returned home for personal reasons. As per reports, Markram arrived in Gqeberha on late-Friday, i.e., just a couple of days prior to the launch of the second Test.
Aiden Markram returns to South Africa camp for second Test: Report
As reported by Cricinfo, Aiden Markram rejoined the South Africa national squad on Friday and is expected to play the upcoming second Test of the series against Australia in Gqeberha.
Earlier this week, the cricketer did not travel with the rest of the squad from Durban to Gqeberha and was forced to miss his team’s training sessions at the venue.
While the 32-year-old missed South Africa’s training routine as he returned home owing to personal reasons, the prolific right-handed batter will likely attend the optional training session on Saturday, October 17.
Despite suffering from a shoulder injury concern in the first Test, Aiden Markram is now understood to be named in South Africa’s playing XI for the second Test of the series, set to be played between October 18 and October 22 at the St George's Park Cricket Ground in Gqeberha.
Why is Aiden Markram’s availability important for South Africa in 2nd Test?
WTC title holders South Africa lost the first Test of the series against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban last week by 214 runs. The hosts bundled out for just 206 runs in the decisive innings of the match in their unsuccessful chase of 421 runs.
Aiden Markram himself chipped in with over a third of South Africa’s 206-run total on a challenging Durban surface.
The cricketer washed up 237 deliveries to conjure 75 fighting runs with 10 elegant boundaries in their second innings. He also made 37 runs in the first innings to aggregate over 100 runs in the match, the highest among all South Africa batters.
Notably, it was his splendid century that won South Africa its first major ICC silverware just last year, against Australia no less, in the final of the 2025 WTC at Lord’s.
With South Africa trailing in the series, Markram’s presence could prove crucial as his team looks to bounce back in Gqeberha after their opening humiliation in Durban.
