Within hours, reports began to emerge about Jayawardene’s likely replacement, with five contenders coming into the the limelight.

MI interviewing five iconic names to be next head coach

According to NDTV, the five-time champions have already started the round of interviews with five iconic names, one of whom would replace Mahela Jayawardene.

Former World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, Australian legends Aaron Finch & Michael Hussey and former South African greats Adrian Birrell & Mark Boucher are being considered by MI for the role.

Notably, Morgan’s name was floating as CSK’s next head coach, but Zaheer Khan edged him out. Meanwhile, Hussey, who played a vital role in CSK’s dressing room, could also become the rival franchise’s top boss.

The T20 World Cup-winning captain Finch may not have any formal coaching experience, but he is regarded as a worthy voice in cricketing circles.

Moreover, Adrian Birrell is a renowned coach, with three titles for Sunrisers Eastern Cape as the biggest achievement on his resume.

Lastly, Boucher has been around the MI circles for a while, as he served as the head coach during the IPL 2023 and 2024 seasons. Recently, the franchise signed him to lead its sister franchise, MI Emirates, for ILT20 2026/27.

If a Cricbuzz report is to be believed, then Mumbai Indians are not considering Eoin Morgan. That said, it hinted that Mike Hussey, Aaron Finch and Adrian Birrell are being contacted by the MI management.

It is understood that Morgan and Adam Gilchrist, another name floating in media reports, aren't eager to commit to a long-term arrangement like the IPL and want to focus on their families.

"Neither (Morgan and Gilchrist), however, is available and they are believed to have made clear to the IPL managements.
