On Sunday, August 23, the 63rd edition of the Duleep Trophy kick-started with East Zone taking on North East Zone and North Zone locking horns against West Zone. The matches were telecast live, and eyes were on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who featured in his first domestic outing since his India debut.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi got the opportunity to represent East Zone and also serve as Ishan Kishan’s deputy for the ongoing campaign. The 15-year-old didn’t get off to a brilliant start as he returned to the pavilion cheaply.

Vaibhav didn’t pay much heed to the idea of respecting the format of the game and went ultra-aggressive from ball one. The southpaw hit a couple of boundaries in the first-over he faced and then threw his wicket away.

His short stay at the crease was ended by North East Zone pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam, as the 30-year-old bowler had the last laugh against a dangerous Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old held his head in shame and walked to the pavilion, which is when the fans spotted a taped jersey.

Why Did Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Tape His Jersey?

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi taped the initial number on his jersey and donned a ‘3’ number jersey. The fans were confused. Notably, the 15-year-old has his lucky no.3 behind the back of his every jersey.

Sooryavanshi plays with the No.3 jersey for Rajasthan Royals and made his India debut with the No. 3 jersey. Now, it seems that the logistics manager for East Zone failed to get a No.3 jersey for Vaibhav. Therefore, the youngster used his brain and taped one side of the jersey so that the Number appears to be No.3.

However, luck didn’t favour him, and he got out for just 8 (6).  Sooryavanshi still has the chance to reverse his fortune when he will come to bat in the 2nd innings.

Why Does Sooryavanshi Wear No. 3 Jersey?

Vaibhav's short stay at the crease was ended by North East Zone pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam, as the 30-year-old bowler had the last laugh against a dangerous Sooryavanshi.

Notably, the move has stemmed from a request from Sooryavanshi’s mother. Sooryavanshi revealed it was his mother who wanted him to go with no.3 in the continental showpiece because of numerology.

“1 and 2 make 3. My mother told me that there is no point in taking 12; let's take three directly," said Sooryavanshi during India A's media day ahead of the Under-19 Asia Cup 2025.

Since then, Sooryavanshi has donned the No.3 jersey. It has brought him luck as the youngster produced a brilliant IPL season, won the orange cap. The performance also helped him earn his India call-up, which eventually led to his debut also against England.
