In yet another concerning development in Bangladesh cricket, the Bangladesh Premier League is in grave danger of being cancelled for the upcoming season of 2026/27.
This comes in the midst of all the unfortunate events around the BCB over the past 6-7 months, which also saw them being replaced by Scotland at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after they revolted against the BCCI and the ICC.
Why is BCB skipping BPL 2026/27?
According to a recent report from Prothom Alo, a local Bangladeshi news outlet, the BCB is thinking about whether to conduct the BPL 2026/27 season.
This is due to the board’s failure to attract suitable franchises to invest in the league. Instead, the board is thinking of using the season-long break to restructure the league, smoothing their operations before returning next year.
This is not the first time that this idea has been discussed in the media. Earlier in the summer, BCB president and former captain Tamim Iqbal had threatened of cancelling the league due to financial irregularities.

Dark clouds over BPL
As mentioned above, Tamim Iqbal had openly blasted the previous regime for financial irregularities in the league.
He had also exposed Sylhet Titans and Noakhali Express for failing to fulfil criteria outlined by BCB’s LOI and not signing formal agreements with the board.
He had also admitted that the franchises have to give a Tk 10-crore bank guarantee, but the old management had accepted Tk 2-crore guarantees, while also talking about the unfulfilled player contracts.
“When I said that it’s better not to hold BPL like this, I meant it. Without any reason, you have to hold BPL in a patchwork manner, taking Tk 2 crore as bank guarantee instead of Tk 10 crore; it’s better not to do it. In future, those who will come [into the board], I hope they will work on it,” he said in June.
What would be the effects of cancelling BPL 2026/27?
As things stand, the BPL is not the most lucrative or the most loved T20 league in the world. The players treat it like an alternative to other tournaments, where they fail to attract contracts.
Additionally, players have revolted against certain owners for failing to pay them on time, and some match-fixing scandals have also emerged around the tournament.
If the latest reports of cancelling BPL 2026/27 are true, it would present the BCB with a great opportunity to conduct a thorough review of everything that is going wrong in the tournament and return with a well-drilled tournament.
It will also save finances, which are used in the competition and can be used in the grassroots. That being said, despite not being a lucrative competition, BCB still earns from sponsor deals in the league, which will be gone.
Alongside that, the young players’ development will be hampered, and some fringe players could also suffer financially.
All things considered, cancelling the next BPL season could be detrimental for BCB and some players. Nonetheless, if BCB uses this time and resources well, it could turn out to be a boon for them in the long run.
