Rinku Singh has left Team India squad for a few days after learning of the tragic passing of his father. Mere hours after India trounced Zimbabwe in match number 48 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Rinku took flight from Chennai to grieve with his family.

The cricketer had also rushed home earlier this week after his father’s health suddenly deteriorated, and the 28-year-old was forced to miss India’s training session in Chennai. While he joined the ‘Men in Blue’ for the 2026 T20 World Cup match against Zimbabwe on February 26, the blistering lower-order batter was spotted getting visibly consoled by teammate Mohammed Siraj near the boundary.

Rinku Singh re-joined the Indian team for the Super 8 match against Zimbabwe on Thursday, February 26 in Chennai. The cricketer even took field as a substitute fielder for Abhishek Sharma during the Zimbabwe innings at one stage.

Amidst his father’s deteriorating health and battle with stage-4 liver cancer, the 28-year-old was spotted getting visibly consoled by fast bowler Mohammed Siraj. Incidentally, Siraj also lost his father Mohammed Ghouse way back in late-2020 due to a lung ailment.

The moment between Rinku Singh and Mohammed Siraj near the boundary reflected a silent understanding between two cricketers, one battling uncertainty and the other familiar with the pain of losing a father.

Rinku Singh loses father to cancer, leaves squad

Rinku Singh was eventually forced to once again leave India squad and fly back home after learning about the sudden passing of his father Khanchand Singh. Khanchand passed away at the Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida. He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago and was under strict medical supervision for his stage-4 liver cancer.

As per the cricketer’s past admittance, his father played a huge role in shaping his cricketing career. His father worked in gas cylinder distribution and faced many financial struggles. However, Khanchand Singh always stood firmly behind Rinku’s ambitions.

Unfortunately for the Singh family, Rinku’s father passed away mere months prior to the cricketer’s planned wedding with politician Priya Saroj.

India to face West Indies, Rinku Singh’s availability uncertain

Team India walloped Zimbabwe by 72 runs in match 48 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on February 26 in Chennai. Batting first, the ‘Men in Blue’ mounted 256-4 in 20 overs courtesy of half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya.

In response, a three-wicket haul from Arshdeep Singh restricted Zimbabwe to 184-6 in 20 overs as India now sets up a virtual quarter-final match with West Indies. The match will be hosted by the Eden Gardens in Kolkata later this week on March 1.

As of now, it remains to be seen if Rinku Singh will re-join the squad in time for India’s must-win match against West Indies. The winner will qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament, thus joining South Africa from Group 1.
