Pakistan team pulls out of India match [Source: AFP]
The Pakistan cricket team has boycotted its T20 World Cup 2026 match against India at the instructions of the Pakistan government. On February 1, the Pakistan government confirmed their radical stance at the height of the prevailing geo-political tensions between the two countries.
The government and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also seemingly made the decision in a bid to support the BCB amidst Bangladesh’s exclusion from the tournament.
Nonetheless, with Pakistan boycotting their crucial Group A fixture against India, here is a look at the revamped Super Eight qualification scenario for the ‘Men in Green’.
Pakistan to lose two points with India boycott
For starters, the Pakistan cricket team is guaranteed to lose their two points for boycotting arch-rivals India in the Group A stage of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
With five teams placed in Group A, each team is scheduled to play once against other members to constitute four group matches. At the end of the opening round, the top two sides from Group A, much like every other group, will advance to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
However, Pakistan’s imminent boycott of India match now leaves them with no margin for error, making their remaining three group fixtures absolutely crucial.
How can Pakistan still qualify for Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2026?
With Pakistan serving Team India two free points on a platter, the ‘Men in Green’ will now have to ensure that they secure a top two finish in the Group A stage of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The maximum points Pakistan can accumulate now at the end of the group stage is six. They now have to defeat each of the other Group A members; namely Namibia, Netherlands and the USA. A defeat against any of the three aforementioned nations will likely end any Super Eight qualification hopes of the Pakistan team.
While Pakistan will be expected to walk over Namibia, giant-killers Netherlands might prove a tricky obstacle capable of springing an upset.
Moreover, the Pakistan team will also take field against USA to mark a contest that comes with the baggage of past demons and little room for slip-ups. It is worth noting that the USA team played a huge role in knocking Pakistan out of the 2024 T20 World Cup within the first round itself.
Pakistan schedule for ICC T20 World Cup 2026
With no room for complacency, the Pakistan team has now three must-win matches to contend with in the Group A stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Under the leadership of Salman Agha, the Pakistan team will commence its campaign with a match against Netherlands on February 7. Here is a look at the entire Group A schedule of the Pakistan in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
- Pakistan vs Netherlands – February 7 in Colombo
- Pakistan vs USA – February 10 in Colombo
- Pakistan vs India (boycotted) – February 15 in Colombo
- Pakistan vs Namibia – February 18 in Colombo
With Pakistan adamant in their boycott stance, it remains to be seen if the ‘Men in Green’ will reverse their decision in case of an early upset against either Netherlands or USA.
