The Pakistan cricket team seems to be gearing up for next year’s 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next year. Yet to qualify for the semifinal in the past three editions of the tournament, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently announced a new tournament for Pakistan players in a bid to prepare them for the showpiece event in South Africa.

Pakistan’s high‑performance director Aaqib Javed has now made a huge claim regarding the national team’s World Cup prospects. Moreover, the former Pakistan fast bowler also bragged about his own past achievements in the process.

Aaqib Javed manifesting Pakistan ‘special’ in World Cup 2027

Pakistan’s high‑performance director Aaqib Javed believes that the Pakistan cricket team can pull up “something special” in next year’s 2027 ICC ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The former cricketer manifested the same since he is ‘involved’ with the national side in some capacity this time around.

As quoted by Public News, Javed also recalled his own personal as well as Pakistan team achievements in their past World Cup wins. The former cricketer recalled the fact that he was part of Imran Khan’s triumphant World Cup crusade in Australia in 1992.

Moreover, he also acknowledged his coaching gig for Pakistan U19 in their 2004 World Cup win, and his assistant coaching gig for Pakistan men’s team in their 2009 T20 World Cup victory.

He said “Pakistan won the 1992 WC & I was a player on that team. Pakistan won the 2004 Under-19 WC, and I was the coach. In the 2009 T20 World Cup, Pakistan won again & I was the assistant coach. So, I was involved in all three WC victories in one way or another. I think something special could happen in the 2027 World Cup.”

What was Aaqib Javed’s contribution in 1992 World Cup win?

Compatible to Aaqib Javed’s claims, the former pacer picked up 11 wickets in 10 innings to emerge as Pakistan’s third most successful bowler of the 1992 World Cup in Australia. He maintained an impressive bowling average of 29.81 in the tournament.

He was also the head coach of the Pakistan U19 team that lifted the 2004 U19 World Cup in Bangladesh, and was part of the coaching setup in Pakistan’s 2009 T20 World Cup win in England.

However, under Javed’s active tenure, the Pakistan cricket team failed to win the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, and failed to qualify for the semifinal of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Aaqib Javed confirms new tournament for Pakistan’s World Cup 2027 prep

Earlier this month, the PCB Director of High Performance confirmed that the board will be organizing a quadrangular 50-overs tournament in Pakistan in August 2027.

The purpose of the tournament will be to help the PCB selection committee in identifying a core group of players for the subsequent 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

In an official media release, Aaqib Javed said, “We have around 18 months until the 2027 World Cup, so this is the right time to begin our preparations. The selectors and coaches sat together and designed this four-team tournament. Four balanced sides will be selected, and all white-ball players will take part.”
