Oman have booked their place in the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Global Qualifier, even after suffering a defeat in their final World Cup League 2 fixture against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai.

The result brought their League 2 campaign to a disappointing end, but they managed to stay ahead of Namibia in the qualification race. The outcome also means Namibia must take another route if they are to secure a place in the 14-team tournament.

Oman edge out Namibia on net run rate to secure Global Qualifier spot

Oman entered their final League 2 fixture knowing that their qualification hopes were still at stake. However, a 42-run defeat against the UAE did not prevent them from progressing, as they finished level with Namibia on 33 points but secured the higher position through a superior net run rate.

The UAE posted 226/8 after being asked to bat first. Captain Rahul Chopra and Adeeb Usmani both scored 47, while Basil Hameed added 43 to give their side a competitive total. Oman left-arm spinner Shakeel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 42 runs.

Oman struggled to build a response during the chase, losing three wickets for just 28 runs. Oman eventually finished on 184/9, handing the UAE a 42-run victory.

The defeat was particularly difficult for Oman as it marked their seventh consecutive loss in the competition. Nevertheless, their earlier results proved sufficient to keep them above Namibia in the final standings and earn direct entry into the Global Qualifier.

World Cup Qualifier Playoff to feature Namibia, Canada, Nepal and UAE

Oman will join the United States, Scotland and the Netherlands as the four teams advancing directly from World Cup League 2 to the 10-team Global Qualifier.

Namibia, Canada, Nepal and the UAE will instead have to compete in the eight-team Qualifier Playoff for another opportunity to progress.

The remaining four playoff participants have come through the World Cup Challenge League competitions. Jersey and Kuwait secured their places from Challenge League A, while Italy and Uganda advanced from Challenge League B.

The Qualifier Playoff will be the final opportunity for these eight teams to reach the Global Qualifier, with four spots available. The 10-team Global Qualifier will then decide the final four participants for the 2027 World Cup.

There will also be an additional reward for the team that finishes at the top of the Global Qualifier. The winner will earn direct entry into the World Cup group stage, while the teams finishing second, third and fourth will move into the newly introduced Super Series.
