Australia has not been at their very best in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, which also saw them march away from the event after failing to qualify for the Super 8. This is a rare sight for a team that dominates the world.

Owing to their downfall, Oman skipper Jatinder Singh has made a massive claim that, if it comes true, can seriously question Australia’s standards in current-day cricket.

For the record, Oman has not won any of their group stage matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, where they have booked losses to Ireland, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe from Group B. While they are eliminated, the skipper wants to make their exit memorable by swinging the sword for the last time at Australia.

How Did Australia Perform in T20 World Cup 2026?

One of the favourites to win the T20 World Cup 2026, Australia started their campaign on a high note, defeating Ireland by a dominant margin of 67 runs.

With their next two fixtures against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, Australia were poised to secure Super 8 qualification on an unbeaten run, given their dominance over those teams in head-to-head encounters. However, on both occasions, Australia surprisingly faltered.

Zimbabwe created the first upset by defeating Australia with a 23-run win, as the Australian batters collapsed while chasing a target of 170. The top order crumbled, with Brad Evans and Blessing Muzarabani running through the lineup, while Cameron Green and Tim David recorded ducks. The surprise defeat already shook Australia's confidence as they faced a must-win game against Sri Lanka.

However, faltering under pressure, Australia failed to deliver with the ball against Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka. Nissanka's 52-ball hundred wreaked havoc on Australia's bowling attack, with only Marcus Stoinis managing to pick up two wickets.

Star bowlers like Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis went wicketless and conceded at economy rates of over 10. This defeat virtually marked Australia’s exit from Super 8 qualification, as they won only one of the three matches they played. However, it was Zimbabwe who ultimately sealed Australia’s fate.

After defeating Australia, Zimbabwe stood on four points and were strong contenders to qualify for the Super 8. When the Zimbabwe vs Ireland clash on February 17 was abandoned due to rain, Zimbabwe were awarded one point and automatically qualified for the Super 8 stage, which officially knocked Australia out of the tournament.

Jatinder Singh Makes Massive Claim Ahead Of AUS vs OMN Clash

Jatinder Singh, the Oman skipper, has made a bold claim regarding Australia’s downfall, stating that his team is ready to strike while they are low on confidence.

Speaking on the eve of the match, Jatinder Singh expressed how excited the Oman team is to take on Australia as they go through a string of losses.

"One hundred percent this is an opportunity. And our boys are looking forward to it. Because T20 is a game of momentum and the moments, and if you play those moments right, you can do anything on that particular day. Australia is not doing well at the moment… it is the best time to crush them. The boys are really positive. They are looking forward to the match against Australia to make their mark," Singh said.

Australia’s Record Against Non-Seeded Teams In T20 World Cup

Australia's record against non-seeded teams in the T20 World Cup has been largely dominant. Against Afghanistan, they have won one out of two matches. Against Bangladesh, they have won all six of their encounters in the T20 World Cup.

Against Ireland, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland, they have also won all the matches they have played against each of these teams, with only Zimbabwe remaining the exception, as they have lost both of their World Cup encounters against them.

Nevertheless, this does not diminish the stature of Australia as a team that won the T20 World Cup in 2021 under the guidance of Aaron Finch. Though the Mitchell Marsh-led side failed to make a mark this year, they are very much poised to bounce back in the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2028.
