Indian opener Sanju Samson’s 97-run knock led India’s five-wicket success against the West Indies in a must-win game in the T20 World Cup 2026. When everyone was showering praises for Sanju Samson, India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, gave a completely different perspective to the Indian fans and experts.
With his statement, Jasprit Bumrah pulled everyone’s attention to the player who was almost forgotten after India’s win against the West Indies. Bumrah’s remarks also left the cricket experts and fans to think a bit differently amidst the flooding praises for Sanju Samson’s batting masterclass.
Jasprit Bumrah praises Shivam Dube for impactful boundaries
During a conversation with ICC broadcaster and his wife, Sanjana Ganesan, Jasprit Bumrah spoke about the impact of Shivam Dube’s two fours in the 19th over. Notably, when Dube came to bat, India needed 17 runs off nine balls, but his two fours in the next three balls took the required runs to nine off seven balls.
Furthermore, the two runs in leg bye on the last ball of the 19th over left only seven runs for India to score in the last over.
“The 2 fours Shivam Dube hit won't be appreciated in the cricketing books and stats, but people who really know cricket, those 2 boundaries took the pressure off us for the final over,” said Jasprit Bumrah in response to Sanjana Ganesan’s question about a particular turning point for him.
“Because sometimes, nine or eight runs in the last over, it can get tricky sometimes,” he added later.

"I’m really happy for him" - Jasprit Bumrah on Sanju Samson
Later in the same conversation, Jasprit Bumrah also hailed Sanju Samson for his batting brilliance to help India clinch victory in the all-important game. The star pacer spoke about the highs and lows Samson had been through in the last month, including his batting failure in the T20I series against New Zealand before the T20 World Cup.
“Unreal, I’m really happy for him because, as you know, in the last month, he has had a little bit of an up and down journey. It can be difficult for you to keep a good mindset, being in and out of the team,” Bumrah said.
“You want stability as a cricketer, you can sometimes question yourself. But come this day, with the conviction that he had, he was absolutely clear. Really really happy for him, top knock, hopefully continues to do this and goes from strength to strength,” he added later.
Bumrah delivers crucial bowling performance against West Indies
In the must-win game against West Indies, Jasprit Bumrah also delivered a crucial performance with the ball. He picked two crucial wickets of Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmyer in the 12th over to bring India back in the game. Bumrah ended his four-over spell with two wickets for 36 runs.
Speaking of Bumrah’s run of form in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, he is currently the second leading wicket-taker for India in the tournament. The 32-year-old has bagged nine wickets in six innings at a decent economy rate of 6.30, including the best performance of ‘three wickets for just 15 runs in a match’.
