New Zealand have reached the T20 World Cup final for the second time in the tournament’s history after defeating a strong South African team in the semi-final.
Notably, South Africa had been unbeaten throughout the competition and looked like one of the favourites to win the title. However, the Black Caps ended their winning run with an impressive performance.
Now, New Zealand will face the defending champions India in a highly anticipated final. The match will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.
Black Caps dominate the semi-final
The semi-final was played in Kolkata, where New Zealand first showed their strength with the ball. Their bowlers delivered a disciplined performance and restricted South Africa to 168 runs.
South Africa tried to build momentum after being asked to bat first. However, the New Zealand bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals and did not allow the Proteas to score freely. As a result, the team could only set a moderate target.
When New Zealand began their run chase, their openers dominated from the start. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen built an outstanding partnership that quickly shifted the game in New Zealand’s favour.

Notably, Finn Allen smashed an unbeaten 100 off just 33 balls, completely destroying the South African bowling attack. His explosive knock turned the chase into a one-sided contest. As a result, the Black Caps chased down the target with nine wickets in hand, finishing the match in just 12.5 overs.
New Zealand's performance in T20 World Cup 2026
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s journey to the semi-finals was not easy. They finished second in their group behind South Africa. Moreover, their Super 8 matches against Pakistan and England were affected by rain and a narrow defeat.
Therefore, they also needed help from Sri Lanka’s results to qualify for the semi-finals. Their strong win over Sri Lanka eventually helped them keep their chances alive.

However, New Zealand’s record at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is not very impressive. The Black Caps have played only two T20 matches at this venue, and they have lost both games.
The first match took place during the New Zealand tour of India in 2023. In the third T20I of that series, New Zealand had a terrible batting performance and were bowled out for just 66 runs. India won that match comfortably by 168 runs, and the score of 66 remains New Zealand’s lowest total at this stadium.
Their second match at this venue came during the group stage of the current T20 World Cup against South Africa. In that match, New Zealand managed to score 175 runs, which is their highest total at this stadium. However, South Africa chased the target successfully and won the match by seven wickets.
Therefore, New Zealand’s past results in Ahmedabad have not been encouraging. Still, a final is a completely different situation. With Mitchell Santner leading the team and several players in excellent form, the Black Caps will hope to overcome their poor record at this venue and win their first T20 World Cup title.
