Mumbai Indians suffered an embarrassing group-stage elimination in IPL 2026 after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 54th match of the tournament.
The five-time champions incurred their eighth defeat of the season, marking their exit from the tournament.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, RCB restricted MI to 166 for seven in 20 overs. In response, the defending champions chased down the total in the final delivery, consolidating their chances of reaching the IPL playoffs.
Mumbai Indians coach breaks silence on premature IPL 2026 exit
This was MI's eighth loss in the tournament, confirming their exit from the IPL 2026. After the game concluded, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene reacted to his team's underwhelming performance.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Jayawardene addressed MI's underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign, admitting he was disappointed with his side's torrid run.

"It's disappointing, we've had our opportunities, we were not good enough, we were not consistent enough with the ball, with the bat and that showed the margins," Jayawardene told the media.
"I think, you know, we were probably 2-3 wins away from being in the same group of contenders to get into that playoff, but we didn't get those wins and today was another classic example that we were short," he added.
Jayawardene reveals what went wrong for Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians' in-form batter Rohit Sharma missed five matches due to a hamstring injury, which he sustained during a high-voltage encounter against RCB.
Additionally, MI's regular skipper Hardik Pandya missed three matches due to fitness concerns, while Jasprit Bumrah's performance was adversely affected by physical and mental fatigue.
Will Jacks joined the team late, while experienced allrounder Mitchell Santner was ruled out of the IPL mid-season due to a shoulder injury.
Jayawardene highlighted these issues at the post-match press conference while reflecting on the factors that derailed MI's IPL 2026 campaign.
"What probably you guys didn't know is we had a lot of injuries, a lot of niggles, guys getting injured, not available, some players were not there as well, so that was mostly forced changes," the Sri Lankan legend said.
Among the available players, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Trent Boult let the team down with middling returns.
Suryakumar has averaged just over 17 this season, while Tilak has blown hot and cold with the bat. Boult has looked far from his best, scalping two wickets in five matches.
The ordinary performances of these players didn't go unnoticed by the MI head coach, who rued the inconsistency of the core group.
"Tactically, we would have changed few, very few during the season. I would have loved to have our main core guys consistently being out there, but there's no excuses," Mahela Jayawardene added.
Mumbai Indians to play for their pride
Having missed out on an IPL playoff qualification, Mumbai Indians will play for their pride in the upcoming matches. The five-time champions have three group-stage games left and will take on Punjab Kings, KKR and Rajasthan Royals on May 14, 20 and 24, respectively.
