Pakistan are going through one of their lowest phases, having been whitewashed by Bangladesh in Tests, although they made a comeback in ODIs against the mighty Australia.
Currently, the Men in Green have two separate head coaches: Mike Hesson leads the white-ball teams and Sarfaraz Khan coaches the Test team.
Pakistan last won an ICC event in 2017, while they reached the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup and reached the semifinal of the subsequent edition. However, they haven’t reached the semifinals of the ODI World Cup since 2011.
The white-ball head coach, in a recent interview with Geo News, has revealed that Pakistan need to come a long way to be successful in major ICC events.
Mike Hesson admits Pakistan lack consistency
While acknowledging that Pakistan have been poor in recent years, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson said the team needs consistency to become successful. Furthermore, he mentioned that the Men In Green had a 20% winning percentage when Hesson took over, and it has now reached around 70%.
"When you inherit a team that wins only 20 per cent of its matches, it is a major challenge. Our first objective was to build consistency in both performances and results, and we have achieved that. We are now winning far more series than before. Our success rate has risen from 20 per cent to around 70 per cent," Mike Hesson told Geo News.

However, the New Zealander has admitted that Pakistan need to find a way to be consistent to succeed in ICC events, while winning it from this stage is still a long shot for them.
"There has been significant improvement compared to where we were before, although there is still plenty of work to do. We need to win consistently because you cannot become world champions with a win rate of just 23 per cent. We still have time before the next ICC event, and we have improved in several key areas," he added.
Pakistan heading for 'horses for courses' approach
Recently, Aqib Javed, who is the Head of development at the PCB's High Performance Centre, announced that the Pakistan board is looking to adopt the 'horses for courses' approach for different approaches.
The Asian nation has had a select core of players who play all three formats, but as they have been getting exposed in major events and against bigger teams, they are set to pick a different set of players, especially in Test and T20I formats.
"The format-based central contract is the first step towards separating teams for each format. This is only the beginning. Eventually, every format could have its own dedicated squad. We will have to do this, and immediately, Test and T20 teams must be separated because the two formats cannot be played in the same way," Aqib Javed had said.
PCB's changed approach for WI vs PAK Tests
If sources are to be believed, PCB are looking to not pick Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Naseem Shah and Noman Ali in the squad for the upcoming Test series in West Indies.
It is understood that the selectors are keen towards picking bowlers like Muhammad Abbas, Muhammad Ali, Khurrum Shehzad, and uncapped Ubaid Shah.
Moreover, the board is likely to move on from Shan Masood, under whom Pakistan have lost 12 out of 16 Tests, and hand over the captaincy of the longest format to Salman Ali Agha or Saud Shakeel.
