In a significant development, Michael Hussey has reportedly rejected Stephen Fleming's offer to join the England coaching setup. After removing Brendon McCullum from his position, the ECB roped in Stephen Fleming, with the recently ousted CSK coach joining England's Test team as the new head coach. 

Fleming had approached former Australian batter Michael Hussey, who was a game-changer for CSK during his coaching stint, to join the English backroom staff as the batting coach. However, Hussey has reportedly turned down the offer in the latest twist. 

Michael Hussey says no to English coaching role

According to a report from The Guardian, although Fleming had considered Hussey to fill the batting coach's void, the legendary Australian cricketer has refused to join the English team. Notably, Hussey has previously been part of England's coaching setup during their title-winning campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022. 

So, had he accepted Fleming's offer, it would've marked his return to the English coaching setup after a gap of nearly four years. 

Speaking of England, they have Marcus Trescothick as their interim head coach, and with Hussey quitting the race, the former opener is the frontrunner to stay with the English Test setup as batting coach.

Australian cricket legend Michael Hussey turned down Stephen Fleming's offer of joining the England Test side as the batting coach, taking up Cricket Australia's offer of a consultancy role instead. 

It's natural from the fans' perspective to think that the historic Ashes rivalry between Australia and England may have influenced Michael Hussey's decision. 

However, the report from The Guardian revealed that Hussey, fondly called Mr Cricket, decided to join the Australian coaching setup as the contract proposed by Cricket Australia offered him the luxury of flexibility.

For instance, Michael Hussey currently serves as the head coach of the Welsh Fire in The Hundred, while also actively engaging himself in commentary stints with renowned media agency Fox Sports. 

Had he accepted a more responsible role like England's batting coach, Michael Hussey would've got little room to complete his active gigs as a broadcaster and coach in other tournaments. England have quite a demanding cricketing schedule coming up and will take on Pakistan, South Africa and Australia across 5 Tests until March 2027. 

On the other hand, Cricket Australia's consultancy role is more flexible and allows him to perform multiple roles simultaneously. 

How Michael Hussey's joining could benefit Australia in the Ashes?

While the England Test batters missed a golden opportunity to collaborate with Michael Hussey and fine-tune their skills, Cricket Australia pulled off a masterstroke by signing the former cricketer ahead of the Ashes. 

Hussey was one of Australia's most consistent batters in the Ashes, amassing 1304 runs in 24 innings at a magnificent average of 59.27. He slammed 13 fifty-plus scores, including four hundreds and nine fifties, in those 24 innings, emerging as a headache for the English bowlers in the Ashes. 

Thus, Hussey is well aware of the English players' thought processes, having ample experience of playing against England and being a part of their dressing room in the past. 

So, he can help the Australian players win the psychological battle against their English opponents while also training them to face the moving ball with confidence. While they have certainly retained the urn, Australia haven't registered an Ashes series victory in England since the 2005 edition. 

Therefore, Hussey's appointment is a massive boost that the Australian players will look to capitalise on when they visit England for the Ashes next year.
