The is still time for IPL 2027, but discussions around player trades, releases, and captaincy changes have already started. One name that has remained in the spotlight after the end of IPL 2026 is Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

There have been earlier reports that Hardik Pandya could look for a new team ahead of IPL 2027. However, as per recent reports (from Times of India), Hardik will stay with Mumbai Indians but might not be appointed as the captain.

The Mumbai-based team had a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing ninth in the points table, and since then his future with the franchise has become a major talking point.

Having said this, in this article, let's take a look at the Hardik Pandya's stats as a player vs captain.

(Hardik Pandya's Batting Record For MI As Captain/Player)

Hardik has scored 646 runs in 39 matches as MI captain, at an average of 21.53 and strike rate of 147.82. As a player, however, he has made 1,476 runs in 92 matches with an average of 27.33 and strike rate of 153.91.

The fact that cannot be denied is that Hardik Pandya's numbers have been more effective with the bat when he has not been leading the side.

The difference in numbers as a player and as a captain could be because of several reasons. As a player, Hardik must have the freedom to focus almost entirely on his own role and can also assess the match situation easily.

Captaincy, on the other hand, must have added a layer of pressure. This must have become significantly more difficult for Hardik when the Mumbai Indians replaced Rohit Sharma as captain in 2024.

Hardik Pandya's bowling numbers also show a similar trend or pattern. Although the difference is not as dramatic as in his batting record, he has been more effective as a bowler when playing purely as a bowler.

Hardik Pandya Thrives Purely As A Player, So MI's Decision Makes Sense

Looking at both batting and bowling stats, the argument that Hardik is better suited to the Mumbai Indians as a player becomes stronger.

His batting average increases from 21.53 as captain to 27.33 as a player, while his strike rate also rises from 147.82 to 153.91. With the ball, his average improves from 34.06 to 31.26, and his economy drops from 10.54 to 9.06.

As a result, it can be concluded that Hardik Pandya has been more productive when he has been allowed to concentrate on being an all-rounder rather than being the person responsible for every major decision.
