Former South Africa umpire Marais Erasmus has broken his silence on the contentious no-ball decision involving India’s Virat Kohli in the high-voltage T20 World Cup 2022 match against Pakistan. This game was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne in front of a record crowd.
The match proved to be one of the all-time greatest ones as Virat Kohli played an innings of his lifetime to take India to the win over Pakistan in the game that went right down to the last ball. India had opted to bowl first after winning the toss, and Pakistan made 159/8 in 20 overs thanks to half-centuries by Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed.

In the chase, Virat Kohli continued on despite India losing quick wickets and scored a brilliant fifty despite the pressure of the rising run rate. India needed 16 runs in the last 6 balls, and Mohammad Nawaz was bowling to Kohli. Under pressure, Nawaz bowled a high full-toss to Kohli, who dispatched it towards the mid-wicket boundary for a six.
To add insult to injury, umpire Marais Erasmus called the ball a no-ball for height, while Pakistani players, including Babar Azam, the captain, crowded him for answers.
This was after Kohli was seen signaling to the umpire about the same, asking for a high no-ball.
Now Marais Erasmus has broken his silence and revealed that he had to wait for the ball to either pass the boundary or the fielder to take a catch before showing any signals.
“It was a game that Virat Kohli won for India. Late in the game, we had a high full toss. We are coached that if a high full toss gets hit in the air, not to commit to your call. So, you make your call mentally, but you don't commit to it, because if the ball gets caught, it can be reviewed. On a dismissal, we can review anything. But if it lands or goes for six, then you need to make the call. So, the ball gets bowled. It is close, and he hits the ball in the air.

There’s a Pakistani guy on the boundary, and I'm waiting either to record the dismissal or call it a six. When it went for six, I put my arm out. The Pakistanis were upset with me because, by then, obviously, Virat had his arms out.
They thought he was pushing me into making that decision. But Babar Azam, I met him when he was 15 years old at a tournament in the West Indies. I just walked up to him and explained to him, "We have to wait because the ball potentially could be caught.
He said, "Okay, thanks," and turned around and walked away. And the whole crowd went silent,” Erasmus stated.
Virat Kohli helped India win a tense game, snatches victory from the jaws of defeat
Pakistani bowlers gave India a huge scare with the ball, as India was reduced to 31/4 in 7 overs, with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma being dismissed for 4 runs, Axar Patel getting run out for 2, and Suryakumar Yadav scoring 15 runs.
However, Virat Kohli was still there, and he got the support of Hardik Pandya as well as they repaired the innings and inched India towards victory. Pandya got out in the last over for 40 runs off 37 balls, including one four and two sixes.
However, Kohli hammered 3 fours in an over to Shaheen Afridi and then hit two memorable sixes to Haris Rauf to bring the equation to 16 runs in the last 6 balls. R Ashwin hit the winning runs in the end to give India a narrow 4-wicket win.
Notably, India has lost only one game to Pakistan in T20 World Cups, in the 2021 edition, while they are undefeated in ODI World Cups against their archrivals.
