Just when the IPL 2026 hype train was about to leave the station, a curveball no one saw coming shook things up. Former India leg-spinner and veteran commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has decided to walk away from IPL commentary and he hasn’t gone quietly.

What started as a retirement announcement has now snowballed into a full-blown controversy with hints of bias, strong reactions and now a clarification that pulls Jay Shah into the limelight.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan calls it quits but leaves a sting behind

Sivaramakrishnan, who has been around the commentary circuit for over two decades, dropped a bomb on social media by announcing his retirement from IPL commentary. But this wasn’t a usual farewell post filled with gratitude and nostalgia. There was clearly more simmering beneath the surface.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan openly pointed out that despite being in the system for 23 years, he was never given opportunities to handle key on-air roles like toss segments or pitch reports.

In his own words, newer faces were getting those chances even during earlier regimes, while he continued to sit on the sidelines. You could almost sense the frustration boiling over.

Racism angle turns the heat up

Things took a sharp turn when a fan suggested that the reason behind him being overlooked could be his skin colour. Instead of brushing it aside, Sivaramakrishnan agreed. That response was enough to light a firestorm.

Suddenly, this wasn’t just about commentary roles anymore. It became a much bigger conversation around bias and representation. What seemed like a personal grievance quickly turned into a serious allegation that put the system under the scanner.

Clarification brings Jay Shah into the picture

Just when things were spiralling, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan came out with another tweet to clear the air but in doing so, he ended up dragging Jay Shah into the conversation.

He made it clear that the issue was not with the BCCI administration as a whole. According to him, this was a one-on-one issue with a particular employee, and not something involving the top brass.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan specifically mentioned that ICC Chairman Jay Shah and the board leadership had nothing to do with the situation. At the same time, he emphasized that he was taking control of his own life and stepping away on his own terms.

A controversy right before IPL 2026

With IPL 2026 just around the corner, this controversy has come at a time when the focus was supposed to be on squads, strategies, and blockbuster clashes. Instead, the focus has shifted off the field.

Sivaramakrishnan’s exit means the end of a long stint in commentary, but the manner of his departure has left more questions than answers. Whether this blows over quickly or turns into a bigger debate remains to be seen.
