The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named England’s playing XI for the upcoming second T20I of the five-match series against India. The board confirmed that the English team will head into the second T20I with a couple of changes into its line-up.
Fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to make his return to the English T20I playing XI after missing the series-opener earlier this week. Uncapped Nottinghamshire star Josh Tongue will be receiving his maiden T20I cap before the match, after having played 12 Test matches for the country since his international debut a couple of years ago.
Luke Wood, Saqib Mahmood dropped for Archer, Tongue
Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue have been confirmed to play England’s second T20I against India on July 4, as replacements for Luke Wood and Saqib Mahmood.
Both Wood and Mahmood have been dropped from the English playing XI, even though the latter of the two speedsters delivered a tight spell in the high-scoring Indian innings at Chester-le-Street earlier this week.

With India mounting 189-7 from 20 overs in the rain-affected game, Mahmood picked up three Indian wickets at an expense of just 33 runs, which included the prized scalps of Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and visiting captain Shreyas Iyer.
In the same game, Luke Wood went wicketless and conceded 35 runs from his three expensive overs.
Comeback man Jofra Archer, meanwhile, recently played the Test series against New Zealand and was rested from the first T20I against India. He has not played a single T20I for England since the conclusion of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year.
Josh Tongue will be receiving his maiden T20I cap for England, even though the fast bowler has not played a single 20-overs competitive game in nearly a year.
Harry Brook will continue to lead the national side, and he is accompanied by struggling opener Jos Buttler, senior spinner Adil Rashid, star all-rounder Sam Curran among others. Here is a look at England’s entire playing XI for the second T20I against India.

Josh Tongue holds an experience of just 21 T20 matches in his career. He played 11 of those matches in England’s The Hundred spanning 2023 and 2025 editions for the Manchester Super Giants franchise.
Tongue played his remaining 10 T20 games at England’s Vitality T20 Blast competition for the Worcestershire Cricket Club. In 21 innings overall, the speedster has picked up 29 wickets at an average of 19.03.
England to face India in second T20I in Manchester
The first T20I between the two sides earlier this week turned out to be a damp squib affair at the Riverside Ground in Durham. With series locked after the no result, the team sides will now face each other in the second T20I match at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester.
The match will be played on Saturday, July 4 and the action will commence from 7:00 PM IST onwards.
