Delhi Capitals faced Mumbai Indians in Match 13 of the WPL 2026 on January 20, at Vadodara, as they looked evade the bottom place after a torrid start to the season, winning only one of their first four matches under the new skipper Jemimah Rodrigues.
On the other hand, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI were coming into the clash after consecutive losses against UP Warriors, after they had gotten off to a good start as the defending champions, winning two of their first three games. Notably, they had also beaten the Capitals in their first encounter of the season by a big margin of 50 runs in Navi Mumbai.
As DC looked to avenge their first leg defeat, here’s how the match panned out.
Nat-Sciver Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur prevent an early collapse for Mumbai Indians
After asking the Women in Blue to bat first, Delhi started the match well, with two quick breakthroughs in the powerplay, reducing MI to 21/2 in 4.1 overs. Sajeevan Sajana was dismissed for 9(9), while Hayley Matthews struggled for her 12(15).
With two wickets in the gap of three balls, the onus was on the experienced pair of Nat Sciver-Brunt and captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and the duo did not disappoint. They added 78 runs for the third wicket before the captain fell while trying to dance down the track to take on Shree Charani — hitting it straight down to Lucy Hamilton on long on. She finished with 41(33), taking the orange cap.
On the other end, NSB remained unbeaten for the rest of the innings and got a crucial 65*(45) with six fours and two sixes to her tally. Nicola Carey and Sanskriti Gupta chipped in with 12(11) and 10*(5), respectively, in the midst of a fine 3/33 (4) spell from Shree Charani.
Lizelle Lee provides another explosive start
The Capitals opener got them off to a flyer in the run-chase as they scored 63 for the first wicket in just 7.3 overs before Vaishnavi Sharma’s crafty left-arm spin cleaned up Shafali Varma around the legs at 29(24) with six fours. On the other end, Lizelle Lee, who is in red-hot form, got a quick-fire 46 off 28 with seven fours and a six as she fell for a controversial run out, which left her fuming.
Before both openers were dismissed, DC had put up 84 runs on the board in 10.2 overs and needed 70 from 58 when captain Jemimah Rodrigues joined Laura Wolvaardt.
Jemimah Rodrigues' brisk fifty takes Delhi Capitals through
Following an unfortunate run-out of Wolvaardt, when the ball flicked off NSB’s fingers onto the stumps on a Jemimah straight drive, the skipper took the responsibility to accelerate in the final four overs and scored a 51*(37) with five fours and a six to help Delhi Capitals win their second match of the season. Marizanne Kapp also got a quick 10*(6), including a six to finish off the match.
