The chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Jay Shah, finally addressed the controversy that unfolded before the start of the 2026 T20 World Cup. For several weeks, the world witnessed debates and boycott threats from multiple teams.
Eventually, Jay Shah decided to break his silence and deliver a strong message that many believe was directed toward Pakistan and Bangladesh. Notably, the T20 World Cup 2026 was expected to be one of the biggest cricket events of the year. However, the tournament began with unexpected drama. Bangladesh decided to boycott the T20 mega event.
Bangladesh refused to travel to India
The team requested that their matches be shifted away from India. Bangladesh cited safety concerns and rising political tensions between the countries. Therefore, the team asked the ICC to move their matches to Sri Lanka, which was also hosting part of the tournament.
Soon after the request was reviewed, the ICC did not agree to change the schedule. As a result, Bangladesh refused to travel to India for their matches. This decision created a major challenge for the ICC and also placed the entire tournament schedule in danger.
Despite receiving security assurances from the ICC, Bangladesh continued to stand firm on their position. Eventually, the ICC made a strong decision and removed Bangladesh from the competition. Scotland were then brought in as a replacement team in the tournament.

Pakistan threatened to boycott T20 World Cup match against India
Soon after Bangladesh were removed, Pakistan took a strong stance. Notably, Pakistan first announced that they would boycott the entire tournament. The board claimed that the ICC had treated Bangladesh unfairly.
Later, Pakistan changed their position slightly. The team confirmed participation in the tournament. At the same time, Pakistan declared that they would not take the field against India during their group-stage match in Colombo. However, the situation changed once again within a few days.
After further discussions with the ICC, Pakistan reversed its decision. The ICC confirmed that Bangladesh would not face any sanctions for missing the tournament. In addition, Bangladesh also received hosting rights for a future ICC event, most likely the next Under-19 World Cup.
Jay Shah breaks silence on T20 World Cup drama
Days after the tournament ended, Jay Shah finally spoke about the events during the Indian Business Leader Awards in Mumbai. Jay Shah explained that the tournament faced serious uncertainty before it even began.
“This ICC World Cup was very important because there was a lot of chatter before the start of the tournament about whether certain teams would participate and how the World Cup would go ahead. As ICC chairman, I can say that no team is bigger than the organisation and no single team makes an organisation. An organisation is a combination of all teams,” Shah added.
Despite the early drama, the tournament turned into a huge success. Jay Shah revealed that the T20 World Cup recorded massive global viewership.
“The World Cup has shattered all viewership records. For the first time in history, we recorded 7.2 million concurrent viewers. All records were broken in overall viewership.
If you see, the USA gave India a hard time, the Netherlands troubled Pakistan, Zimbabwe beat Australia, and Nepal gave England a scare. I congratulate all the associate teams; they have done very well against the full members,” Shah added.
India script history in the T20 World Cup
The tournament ended with a historic moment for India. India defeated New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Notably, this victory helped India become the first team to win a T20 World Cup at home. At the same time, India also became the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles.
