New Zealand and South Africa cricket teams will collide in the first T20I of their five-match series on Sunday, March 15. The match will mark the first T20I outing for both sides since the conclusion of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India earlier this month.
The much-awaited contest will be hosted by the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, and the action will commence from 11:45 AM IST onwards.
New Zealand vs South Africa Preview
The New Zealand cricket team reached the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup, before losing convincingly to hosts India by 96 runs in Ahmedabad on the big day. For the series against South Africa, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) picked only eight players from New Zealand’s T20 World Cup squad, including captain Mitchell Santner for the first three T20Is.

South Africa, on the other hand, also named an understrength squad for the series against New Zealand following the conclusion of the showpiece event in India.
Incidentally, the Proteas were firm favourites to lift the trophy owing to their unbeaten run, before losing to New Zealand by nine wickets in a lop-sided semifinal in Kolkata.
New Zealand Playing XI vs South Africa- 1st T20I
Openers and Top Order- Devon Conway, Nick Kelly, Tim Robinson
In the absence of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, prolific top-order batter Devon Conway is set to return to the New Zealand playing XI as their opener.
After spending the entire 2026 T20 World Cup on the sidelines, Conway will likely be paired with Wellington star Nick Kelly. The 32-year-old is yet to play a single T20I match for New Zealand, and is expected to earn his maiden cap before the match.
Tim Robinson, who has been out of New Zealand’s playing XI since the series opener against India in January, will likely bat at number three owing to his explosive T20I strike rate of 138.86.
Middle Order and All Rounders- Tom Latham, Bevon Jacobs, Mitchell Santner, Jimmy Neesham
Bevon Jacobs may have played just five T20Is for New Zealand and averages a dismal 23.66 in the format. However, the explosive middle-order batter bludgeoned five successive half-centuries in the recently-concluded Super Smash.
He will likely join Test captain and comeback man Tom Latham in the middle-order, who will be making his return to New Zealand's T20I XI in nearly three years.
Captain Mitchell Santner and fellow seasoned pro Jimmy Neesham will further strengthen New Zealand’s batting order as the team's two seniormost all-rounders in the XI. Both Santner and Neesham will be expected to bat at either number six or number seven positions.
Bowlers - Cole McConchie, Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears
T20 World Cup all-rounder Cole McConchie, who recently wrecked South Africa in the semifinal with his right-arm spin, will likely bat at number eight.
Nathan Smith might receive his maiden T20I cap as the speedster holds an impressive T20 record in New Zealand's domestic cricket.
After playing just one match in the T20 World Cup 2026, lanky paceman Kyle Jamieson will be making his return to the playing XI in the absence of several senior fast bowlers like Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Jacob Duffy.
He will join Ben Sears, who recently enjoyed a prolific wicket-taking Super Smash season for Wellington.
Both Jamieson and Sears will form forces with Nathan Smith to helm New Zealand's pace attack against South Africa.
