The Buzz Is Around Jasprit Bumrah's Fitness, But Do India Really Need Him To Win In Sri Lanka?

India have begun their preparations for the upcoming Tests against Sri Lanka. The Shubman Gill-led side will tour the Island Nation for two Tests starting on August 15. BCCI has already named a 15-member squad, but Jasprit Bumrah is subject to fitness.

Bumrah has been out of action since England ODIs after he injured his knee. The right-arm seamer is facing a race against time to be fit for the Sri Lanka series.

In the latest developments, the buzz is around Jasprit Bumrah because contrasting reports are doing the rounds on the internet. 

As things stand, Bumrah is yet to bowl at CoE, but early indications suggest he could be available for the series, joining the team directly in Galle. He is unlikely to join the squad on August 3, for their scheduled departure on August 4, as reported by Times of India. 

"Jasprit Bumrah has recovered from his impact injury. He has cleared the fitness Tests mandated by the COE. Hopefully he will be available for both games as he is integral to the team's plans," a senior BCCI official told PTI, giving Indian fans relief.

Now, there is a lot of buzz around Jasprit Bumrah, but is the India seamer actually required in Sri Lanka? This article will shed light on whether India really need Jasprit Bumrah the most to win in Sri Lanka.

Conditions suit spinners more; Bumrah may not bowl regularly

Despite India trying to push Bumrah to play in Sri Lanka, history suggests otherwise. If we look at the stats, then spinners have taken 2730 wickets in Sri Lana, while the Pacers have 2062 wickets to their name. Hence, conditions suit spinners here more, which is why Jasprit Bumrah might not be effective in the Island Nation.

Looking at India’s stats in Sri Lanka, then Indian pacers have just 170 wickets in 132 innings, while the spinners have 172 wickets in 88 innings, being more effective than the seamers.

Even, four of the top five leading wicket-takers in Sri Lanka vs India Tests are spinners - Muthiah Muralidaran, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin in that order.

Hence, the BCCI should not rush Bumrah, because it will be the spinners who will make a difference in Colombo, Galle.

Fielding might drain him out

Besides the on-field conditions, the weather won’t support Bumrah’s return as well. The hot and humid conditions will make it tough for the fielders, and it increases injury risk. If we look in the recent past, then several seamers have got themselves injured. 

Shaheen Afridi injured his knee in Sri Lanka in 2022, and the seamer has never returned to his best since then. Hence, India should not rush Jasprit Bumrah to play in Sri Lanka because neither the surface nor the weather conditions are suitable for his return.

Decoding why India are desperate to send Jasprit Bumrah To Sri Lanka

Jasprit Bumrah made his India debut in 2018. Since then, India have never travelled to Sri Lanka. The last time India played a Test match in Sri Lanka was back in 2017. It was 2008 when Sri Lanka last beat India in a Test series in Sri Lanka.

The Island Nation is known for its spin-friendly tracks, and even before Bumrah, the spinners were getting the job done for India. However, this time around, the situation is different because India will miss R Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja will be the sole spinner who has experience of playing on Lankan tracks.

The squad features Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain, but they have a combined experience of one Test, which is why the BCCI wants an experienced talisman like Jasprit Bumrah to go to Sri Lanka. 

Gautam Gambhir is already under pressure as his job is under threat following the disastrous UK tour. India were already struggling in the current WTC cycle, and losing a Test series against Sri Lanka will be the final nail in the coffin for Gambhir’s coaching career. 

Bumrah is India’s highest-wicket-taking pacer in WTC with 185 wickets in 79 innings, and his experience will help the Shubman Gill-led side even in Sri Lanka.

Jasprit Bumrah may not be a necessity in Sri Lanka, but his importance can't be ignored either

To conclude, the stats and history clearly suggest that Jasprit Bumrah may not be required to travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series, as spinners like Manav Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja, Saransh Jain and Kuldeep Yadav will shoulder the majority of the workload. 

India will most likely go ahead with three spin bowling options. However, the only reason they might opt for two frontline seamers, including Jasprit Bumrah, is the fact that their spin department looks a bit undercooked, comprising an ageing Jadeja and two new-comers- Saransh Jain and Manav Suthar. 

All in all, a lot is at stake for India, and they cannot afford to lose against Sri Lanka from their WTC perspective. At the same time, they must judiciously manage Jasprit Bumrah's workload, considering he'll undoubtedly be their most valuable asset for the 2027 World Cup.
