Matheesha Pathirana Injury Update Concerns KKR Days Before IPL 2026

The three-time champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), signed Sri Lankan pace icon Matheesha Pathirana for a whopping price tag of INR 18 crore ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

The move looked solid at the point, considering the experience Pathirana gained during his stint with the Chennai Super Kings. However, things took a solid U-turn when the Sri Lankan pace sensation injured his calf during the group clash of the 2026 T20 World Cup against Australia in Pallekele last month.

Trouble for KKR ahead of IPL 2026

That injury not only ruled Matheesha Pathirana out of the 2026 T20 World Cup but also made his participation in the IPL 2026 unsure.

With the Indian extravaganza nearly two weeks away, Pathirana has issued a concerning update for the new IPL franchise, which bought the Sri Lankan for a hefty sum.

On Tuesday, he posted a picture on his social media platform giving an update on the Matheesha Pathirana injury update. He wrote in that picture that he is not in India and rehabbing with the Sri Lanka Cricket.

"Hello everyone!! Just to clarify, I'm still in Sri Lanka continuing my rehab with SLC. I haven't gone to India yet, so please stay clam ☺️🤍!" Matheesha Pathirana wrote in a story posted on his Instagram.

Matheesha Pathirana's long affair with injuries

Matheesha Pathirana is known as a death specialist in T20 cricket. Soon after his exploits in the 2022 U19 World Cup, he was picked by MS Dhoni to play in the IPL for the Super Kings. The former Indian skipper groomed the raw seamer, who made his debut in IPL 2022.

After playing just two games in his debut season, Pathirana played an instrumental part in the triumph in IPL 2023, where he picked 19 wickets in 12 games at a strike rate of 14.6.

However, after his heroics in the IPL, the 23-year-old suffered a shoulder injury that required adjustments to his bowling action to reduce stress, which halted his career during the 2023-24 season. Then, in early 2025, a leg injury forced him to miss a major part of 2025.

KKR in dilemma finding 'fit' pacers

KKR invested heavily in its foreign recruits, signing Cameron Green, Matheesha Pathirana, and Mustafizur Rahman. After they had to let go of the Bangladesh international due to geopolitical conflicts, Matheesha Pathirana became their only go-to among seamers. Currently, the KKR are unsure of the Matheesha Pathirana injury update.

Considering the uncertainty over the Matheesha Pathirana injury update and Harshit Rana's availability, the three-time champions are down to limited options in the seam department. Apart from that, they have acquired Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi, who again have a long history of injuries.

Fortunately, they can still name a replacement for a withdrawn Mustafizur Rahman.

Meanwhile, KKR have a strong overseas pool, including Finn Alenn, Tim Seifert, Cameron Green, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, and Rachin Ravindra.
