Jason Gillespie is set to coach a franchise in the upcoming PSL 2026 season, according to reports. The former Australian fast bowler previously had a fallout with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), thus making his impending potential return to the country a notable and somewhat unexpected development.
As of now, the name of the PSL franchise has not been revealed yet. However, the report states that there have been talks between Jason Gillespie and the top brass of the franchise management.
Jason Gillespie likely to coach a PSL team
Former Australian fast bowler Gillespie will reportedly be coaching a PSL franchise in the upcoming PSL 2026 season. As reported by Pakistan journalist Au Rangzeb Younis, there have been talks between the cricketer-turned-coach and the team management, and the name of the franchise will be unveiled soon.
As of now, fans can only wonder which franchise Gillespie will eventually take charge of and how his presence in the PSL ecosystem will unfold after his previous stint in Pakistan.
It is worth noting that Jason Gillespie has had prior coaching experience with Adelaide Strikers in BBL, with Papua New Guinea, with Sussex in County cricket and with South Australia in Australian domestic circuit.
Moreover, Gillespie also served as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team for a brief period after getting appointed to the high-profile role back in April 2024. During his tenure, the Pakistan team suffered a humiliating 0-2 Test series defeat at home to Bangladesh. However, Gillespie’s troops responded back with a strong 2-1 win over England a couple of months later.
Jason Gillespie’s fallout with Pakistan cricket
Back in April 2024, Gillespie was appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan Test side for a two-year period. In October later that year, the champion Australian bowler also took up Pakistan’s white-ball duties on an interim basis following the sudden resignation of regular coach and former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten.
However, by December 2024, Gillespie tendered his resignation as Pakistan coach, bringing a premature end to his tenure amid reports of internal differences and a lack of clarity over roles and long-term vision.
The ex-cricketer announced the same just ahead of Pakistan’s high-profile Test tour of South Africa, which the ‘Men in Green’ went on to lose by a crushing 0-2 margin under the leadership of Shan Masood.
A few days after announcing his resignation, Jason Gillespie stated that he was infuriated with PCB’s policy of not allowing head coaches in any say regarding selection matters. The fast bowler also added that he was not informed beforehand about the sudden sacking of Pakistan’s high-performance coach Tim Nielsen.
Contrary to the latest rumors of Gillespie making his coaching return for a PSL 2026 franchise, the former cricketer himself once stated that his experience with Pakistan had “dampened” his love for coaching. The legendary paceman claimed that at the time, he had no interest in coaching, and would even deny an offer from Cricket Australia for the Australian cricket team.
