Bangladesh coach speaks on Litton Das' injury ahead of West Indies series [Source: AFP]
Litton Das is still recovering from a hip injury and has not yet regained full fitness. With the West Indies Test series inching closer, the Bangladesh coach has urged other batters to seize this opportunity and prove themselves.
Das sustained a hip joint injury shortly after the one-off Test series against Afghanistan, where he had scored a century. Subsequently, he was ruled out of the ODI Tri-Nation series 2026 against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
Phil Simmons breaks silence on Litton Das’ injury
Meanwhile, Bangladesh have a 2-game Test series against West Indies coming up, with the first Test scheduled on October 28 in Dhaka. So far, Litton Das is under medical supervision with no clear timeline for his return.
Amid this, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons acknowledged that losing a player of Litton's quality would be a setback. However, he wants the other batters to see the situation as an opportunity rather than a problem.
"Well, we will always miss a player of that class, you know. It's a gift, but again, it gives an opportunity to somebody else to come and hold that spot and help us to win the game,” Simmons told Daily Star.
He suggested that someone must step up from the batting unit to fulfil the responsibilities of Litton Das. Simmons apparently wants Bangladesh to develop a team in which other players can contribute when an established player is unavailable.
“That's what we've been trying to produce in here, that when somebody is out, somebody else comes in and fixes that position and does what is necessary in that position. So, hopefully whoever is batting in his position in the upcoming game will fulfil that," he added.
Who can replace Litton Das?
It's important to note that Litton Das is not officially ruled out of the Test series vs West Indies. His hip scans have shown no serious damage, and the medical team is working relentlessly to make him fit in time for the first Test.
But in case Das fails to regain complete fitness, Towhid Hriody would be an ideal candidate to replace him. He has played only a single Test in his career, scoring 12 runs in 2 innings.
However, in recent series vs South Africa A, he scored 350* runs off 481 balls in the second unofficial Test to become only the third Bangladesh batter to score a triple century in first-class cricket.
Hence, this would be a perfect opportunity for Towhid Hridoy to shed the ‘white-ball’ specialist tag. He can step into Litton Das’ shoes and create his own space in the Test team.
