Scott Boland Achieves Rare Australian Test Record [Source: AFP]
Australian seamer Scott Boland picked up a five-wicket-haul in the second Test vs South Africa at Gqeberha. In the process, he scripted a rare record at 37 years of age.
With a 1-0 lead in the series, the Aussies opted to bowl first. However, the first day was ruined due to a wet outfield and bad light. Regardless, on Day 2, Boland unleashed his magic.
Scott Boland in an elite list of Australian players
Veteran Australian fast bowler Scott Boland chipped in 2 wickets on Day 1 itself as South Africa finished with 20/2 at stumps. Later on Day 2, Boland continued to overpower the Protea batters.
He dismissed Ryan Rickelton, Marques Ackerman and Marco Jansen to complete his five-wicket-haul. With that, at 37 years and 190 days old, Scott Boland became the second-oldest Australian fast bowler to take a 5-fer in a Test innings
Frank Laver remains the oldest Australian seamer to achieve the feat, at 39 years and 231 days, after taking 8/31 against England in Manchester in 1909. But now, Boland has entered his elite list with his heroics vs South Africa.
However, despite Scott Boland’s remarkable effort, South Africa fought back with skipper Temba Bavuma leading from the front. He forged a 132-run partnership with Jansen to breach the 250-run mark.
Boland’s unexpected inclusion in second Test vs South Africa
Interestingly, Scott Boland wasn’t initially expected to play the second Test between Australia and South Africa at Gqeberha. He pipped legendary spinner Nathan Lyon to make his way into the playing XI.
The decision baffled the critics as they argued that Lyon, who has over 550 wickets in Test format, didn’t deserve to be sidelined. However, Australian skipper Pat Cummins explained that it was a condition-based selection.
The Gqeberha offered a green and seam-friendly pitch. Moreover, overcast conditions further tempted Cummins to include Scott Boland in the playing XI and also opt to bowl first.
And Boland justified his selection by picking up 2 wickets on opening day and later completing his 5-wicket-haul. So overall, Australia will be happy with their strategy.
