Last Sunday, India won its third T20 World Cup title by beating New Zealand by 96 runs at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Ishan Kishan was one of the top performers in the big finale, contributing highly as a batter and a fielder.
Kishan, who slammed a fiery half-century, was going through an emotional turmoil while playing the big game, as his cousin and brother-in-law passed away in a tragic car crash two days before the finale.

After becoming the Champion, the Bihar-born spoke about the painful loss during an interview with the broadcaster. He also revealed how Hardik Pandya motivated him to put the team first. The tragedy back home was the reason why Kishan's father, Pranav Pandey, missed attending the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad.
Days after winning the triumph, the 27-year-old has returned home to Bihar. However, the cricketer reportedly visited his cousin's family to console his relatives before heading to his residence in Patna.
From wild-card entrant to big-game hero!
Ishan Kishan earned a wild-card entry into the Indian squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup after his heroics for Jharkhand, which won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year. He was included for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand just ahead of the megaevent, where he earned a spot in the playing XI.
Throughout the 2026 T20 World Cup, Kishan played various applaud-worthy knocks, including his 40-ball 77 against Pakistan in Colombo and a career-defining fifty in the final.
Came into bat at three, with the scoreboard reading 98/1, the pocket dynamo never let the anchor drop as he stitched a remarkable century partnership with Sanju Samson, with his 25-ball 54. As a result, India posted a massive total of 255/5 on the board. Moreover, he took three precious catches in the second innings and saved countless runs on the field.

When luck favoured the brave Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan was part of the Indian squad during the 2023 ODI World Cup but was suddenly dropped from all squads after he opted to miss the South Africa tour due to personal reasons. The BCCI took disciplinary action against the keeper by dropping him from the central contract list.
In the build-up to the T20 World Cup, Ishan Kishan was nowhere near the pool of players considered for the megaevent. However, he peeked at the right moment with his 517 runs in his SMAT-winning campaign, including a hundred in the final against Haryana.
And, when Shubman Gill, who was opening for India in T20Is, saw his form nosedive, the selectors called Kishan to replace the right-handed batter. The change in fortunes for Ishan Kishan earned him an India recall after being out of the side for more than two years.
Nevertheless, Kishan ended the tournament as India's second-highest run-getter in the 2026 T20 World Cup, with 317 runs off nine innings at a strike rate close to 200.
