Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has swept the world off its feet with an impeccable hitting display during the IPL 2026 season. However, time and age, the 15-year-old has come under scrutiny for his age.
Sooryavanshi is just 15 years old according to official documents submitted with the BCCI. The kid from Bihar raised the ranks quickly, but his meteoric rise has been met with equal criticism.
Since Vaibhav’s popularity started soaring, questions around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's real age also began gaining momentum, with many accusing him of age fraud.
BCCI conducted an age test on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Interestingly, Ravi Prakash Jha, who used to bowl to him since he was 5 years old, revealed that questions were raised about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi age before he was selected among Bihar’s Ranji Trophy probables as a 12-year-old.
Speaking to TOI, Jha said that the BCCI called him to Bengaluru for bone testing and verification, with involvement from the National Cricket Academy system led at the time by VVS Laxman.
The purpose was to settle speculation officially, and only after Sooryavanshi cleared the test was he allowed to participate in the tournament.
“Three weeks before he was picked in Bihar’s Ranji Trophy probables in 2022 as a 12-year-old, allegations were raised about Vaibhav Suryavanshi age. The BCCI called him to Bengaluru, where he had to undergo a bone test. VVS Laxman sir wanted to squash these speculations once and for all. He is only 15, and at such a young age, he has already gone through things that even a 30-year-old hasn’ t," Jha said.
Needless to say, surviving that scrutiny publicly at 12-13 years old probably hardened him mentally much earlier than most cricketers. And today, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is much stronger physically and mentally as he goes out to conquer the world.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s historic IPL 2026 season
That being said, the IPL 2026 season is turning out to be the most iconic tournament for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At just 15, he scored 680 runs in 15 games for Rajasthan Royals, including 65 sixes and a strike rate of 242.86.
In the high-pressure Eliminator game against SRH, Sooryavanshi scored 93 runs off just 29 balls to guide his team to a comfortable victory and advance into the Qualifier 2 game.
However, he missed an opportunity to break Chris Gayle’s record of fastest IPL century by just a single ball. Regardless, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did break the record of most runs scored in a single IPL edition by an uncapped player.
Not only that, the 15-year-old left Gayle behind to record the most sixes in a single IPL season.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his T20I debut soon?
Despite the record IPL season, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may not be ready to step into the T20I world just yet. The biggest reason is that India already has a settled opening pair in Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. They recently helped India win the T20 World Cup, so there is no urgent need to break that combination.
Another valid concern is Sooryavanshi’s fielding. Rajasthan Royals have often used him through the Impact Player rule, which reduces his time on the field. The BCCI may also feel it is too early to judge him after only two IPL seasons.
Many young players start brilliantly before bowlers eventually figure them out. That is why the BCCI may prefer to develop him slowly through India A tours, camps and bilateral series before throwing him into major ICC tournaments.
