Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old gem of Rajasthan Royals, has emerged to be one of the premier batters for the team as they faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator match at Mullanpur on May 27.
However, it was not just ordinary batting that caught the attention on the eve of the game. It was Sooryavanshi madness all over Mullanpur that absolutely devastated SRH bowlers right from the very start.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Almost Breaks Chris Gayle's All-Time IPL Record
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi racked up a 29-ball 97 with a jaw-dropping display of blistering sixes, coming close to breaking Chris Gayle's 30-ball hundred record in the IPL. Sooryavanshi was dismissed by Praful Hinge with just one ball left to break the record, falling short by just three runs of a century.
It was a massive heartbreak for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the teenager walked back to the pavilion with a heavy heart and a face full of despair.
Nevertheless, the whole Mullanpur stadium and the Rajasthan Royals dugout gave a standing ovation to the mammoth knock Sooryavanshi produced in the high-stakes game.
Sooryavanshi smashed 12 sixes and 5 boundaries in the process to play at a strike rate of 334.48. Inside 7 overs, Rajasthan Royals piled up 96 runs to stun the SRH bowlers, with Pat Cummins, Sakib Husain, and Eshan Malinga bearing the brunt of Sooryavanshi's power-hitting.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the opening partner for Sooryavanshi, but he didn't shine enough in front of a breathtaking attack led by Vaibhav himself.
Records That Sooryavanshi Broke
In the process, Sooryavanshi, though unable to break Gayle's 30-ball hundred record, matched him for the most instances of a batter hitting 10-plus sixes in an IPL innings, followed by two instances each from Abhishek Sharma and Finn Allen.
Notably, Sooryavanshi also broke the record for the most runs by a batter in the powerplay in an IPL season, with 490 runs added to his tally, surpassing David Warner's 467 for SRH back in 2016.

For the unaware, Sooryavanshi has bagged 680 runs in this IPL season from 15 appearances at an average of 45.33. More importantly, he also boasts a massive strike rate of 242.86, the highest by any IPL batter this season.
In the process, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored four half-centuries and one century in IPL 2026 while facing 280 deliveries. His highest score came against Hyderabad itself, where he produced a 37-ball 103, albeit in a losing cause.
