IPL franchises propose a new rule [Source: AFP]
The IPL 2027 season has already created buzz among cricket fans. The high-profile exchange between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals, which saw Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav swap teams for the 2026 season, has set the IPL trade window ablaze.
Amid the dramatic event, the potential implementation of a long-overdue rule has promised fans that the 2027 season will be unique for a whole set of different reasons.
Which new rule have the IPL franchises proposed to the BCCI?
According to CricBlogger, the IPL franchises have urged the BCCI to make the registration of the players' agents mandatory for the IPL 2027 season.
It's worth mentioning that players who participate in the IPL sign contracts and lucrative brand deals through their agents.
Apart from handling their business profile, the agents also play a pivotal role in influencing the cricketers' activities on social media, which has also become a broad platform for commercial transactions.
The report states that the IPL franchises have asked the BCCI to keep a track of these agents, who get associated with the cricketers during the two and a half month long showpiece event.
Why have the IPL franchises demanded the registration of the agents?
There's no existing law in the BCCI rulebook that regulates the behaviour and action of the agents hired by professional cricketers during the IPL.
Therefore, there lies some scope for trespassing and unethical activities, which the involved parties allegedly exploit during their IPL stints.

The franchises have demanded more transparency and accountability in governance, something they believe can be achieved by keeping track of the players' agents.
It's worth noting that the Lodha Committee, which investigated the infamous spot-fixing scandal involving two high-profile teams- CSK and Rajasthan Royals- had suggested that the BCCI make the registration process mandatory for agents who represent the cricketers.
However, despite the Lodha Committee's recommendations, the BCCI has yet to prepare a plan of action.
How will the new rule bring transparency in IPL governance?
The new rule, proposed by the IPL franchises, will see the formal registration of the agents hired by cricketers for the 2027 season.
This, in turn, will empower the BCCI with a database having all details of the agents along with the players they will represent in IPL 2027.
Thus, the Indian board will have formal access to the details of the brand signings and social media activities of all the players participating in the competition.
So, no room will be left for corrupt activities that sparked controversy during the IPL 2026 season.
For the unversed, the girlfriend of a certain player allegedly passed some sensitive information to a third party, creating speculations of spot-fixing.
The development forced the BCCI to crack the whip, as the Indian board implemented a set of new regulations, making the sensitive zones inaccessible to everyone other than authorised members.
So, if the BCCI agrees to the proposal, it will help the board manage the activities of all those involved at a microscopic level, marginalising the probability of any discrepancy during the IPL 2027.
