India's landmark cricket tour of Pakistan in 2003-04 was celebrated as one of the biggest steps to rebuild sporting ties between the two nations. Behind the scenes, however, security agencies were dealing with serious concerns that never came out in the public light.

In a recent podcast, former Intelligence Bureau Special Director Yashovardhan Azad has now revealed that the Indian cricket team faced a significant security threat during the tour.

The Massive Terrorist Threat To The Indian Cricket Team

The Indian team's visit came at a time when relations between the two countries remained fragile. The years leading up to the tour had witnessed the 1999 Kandahar hijacking, the Kargil conflict, the failed Agra Summit in 2001, and the attack on the Indian Parliament.

Despite these developments, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee pushed for cricket diplomacy as a means of encouraging peace and dialogue.

According to Yashovardhan Azad on the podcast “The Prakhar Gupta Experience”, the security environment throughout the tour remained extremely challenging.

While the Indian contingent with names like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar travelled across cities including Karachi, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, intelligence agencies remained on constant alert.

The Bomb Scare Escaped By Indian Team

Azad revealed that one of the most alarming moments occurred in Karachi. Around midnight, officials received intelligence suggesting that an attempt could be made to target the Indian cricket team specifically.

The information immediately triggered emergency coordination between Indian and Pakistani security agencies.

The former intelligence official acknowledged that concerns about terrorist activity were ever-present during the visit. Given the delicate geopolitical climate, protecting the players became one of the highest priorities throughout the tour.

How The IB Director Handled The Threat?

Azad, who was tasked with leading the Indian delegation during the tour, explained how security personnel responded after receiving the intelligence warning.

"I took the Indian cricket team to Pakistan in 2003-04. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a great man, and despite Pakistan's repeated betrayals, he still extended a hand of peace, believing that we should do everything possible for peace," Azad said.

Recalling the tense night in Karachi, he added, "The information suggested that there could be an attempt to target only the Indian team. I remember it was my birthday. Around 12 midnight, a DIG-level officer there, a good man named Chaudhry, came and informed us."

Following the warning, security officials worked through the night to ensure the safety of the players and support staff.

"For the next five to six hours, we kept informing the control room, coordinated through communication channels, prepared tactical responses, and remained on high alert," Azad revealed.

He also disclosed that similar concerns emerged in Rawalpindi while the team was staying at the Marriott Hotel. Security measures were strengthened after intelligence inputs pointed towards possible threats.

"We were told about possible threats and had to take extensive precautions," he said.

Speculations Became True

Azad pointed out that the seriousness of those warnings became even more evident years later when the same hotel in Pakistan became the site of a devastating truck bomb attack.

He recalled that three years after the cricket tour, a massive explosive-laden vehicle was detonated near the hotel, causing significant destruction.

The former IB official further explained that accommodation choices were often made with security considerations in mind. In Peshawar, he preferred a hotel located near the residence of the Force Commander because it provided an additional layer of protection.

The India-Pakistan Tour Of 2003-04 That Created History

Despite the challenges away from the field, the tour became one of the most memorable cricketing contests between the two nations.

India won the five-match ODI series 3-2 after thrilling victories in Karachi, Lahore, and the final ODI. The opening match in Karachi remains one of the greatest ODIs ever played, with India defending 349 runs to secure a dramatic five-run victory.

The Test series also produced historic moments. India registered a famous innings victory in Multan, highlighted by Virender Sehwag's triple century, before clinching the series 2-1 with a commanding win in Rawalpindi.

The success of the tour extended beyond cricket. Thousands of Indian supporters travelled across the border, and the series was widely viewed as a symbol of improving relations between the neighbouring countries.
