England have welcomed Ben Stokes back into their playing XI for the third and final Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The all-rounder missed the second Test following an incident at a Chelsea nightclub after England's victory in the series opener at Lord's.
Stokes’ absence cost the team, which suffered a heavy defeat at The Oval and allowed New Zealand to level the series. With the contest now tied at 1-1, England will once again look towards Ben Stokes as they prepare for a decisive clash in Nottingham.
Why Was Ben Stokes Banned From England vs New Zealand 2nd Test?
Stokes was stood down for the second Test after he and fast bowler Gus Atkinson breached the team's unofficial curfew following England's win in the first Test at Lord's.
The pair were involved in events surrounding an incident at a Chelsea nightclub fight and rule breach, prompting investigations by both the ECB and the Cricket Regulator.
As a result, neither player was available for selection during the second Test at The Oval. England struggled and suffered a crushing 253-run defeat after New Zealand posted scores of 391 and 362. England replied with 291 and 209 while chasing a target of 463.
The investigations have since concluded, with the Cricket Regulator determining that there was insufficient evidence to establish any regulatory breach. No further action was taken against either Stokes or Atkinson, clearing the way for their return.

Ben Stokes Back As England Captain for 3rd Test
Following the conclusion of the investigation, England immediately restored Stokes as captain for the series decider. Head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed that the all-rounder would return to lead the side at Trent Bridge.
Stokes showed encouraging form during his time away from the England setup, scoring 95 for Durham in the County Championship. Now, his return comes alongside several changes to the XI, including the recalls of Gus Atkinson, Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir.
McCullum also dismissed speculation about any rift between himself and Stokes. The England coach stated that the pair remain close and continue to share the same vision for the team. He described Stokes as enthusiastic and fully prepared for the challenge ahead.
"It's been a real privilege for me over the past four years to work in intimate detail and as a partnership alongside Ben. I look back on that fondly about how tight we were as a group and how tight we were as a pair. Anything outside of that, it's not really up to us. Ben and I are tight," McCullum shared.

England Look To Regroup Under Stokes In Series Decider
England enter the final Test under pressure after losing six of their last seven matches. Their defeat at The Oval exposed several weaknesses, and the team now faces a must-win situation to secure the series.
The return of Ben Stokes provides a major boost, not only because of his all-round abilities but also due to his influence as captain. England's players have repeatedly spoken about the importance of his presence in the dressing room, and his return now makes up for it more than ever to turn the series around at home.
