The ICC is preparing for an important set of meetings next week, where officials are expected to discuss the future of the World Test Championship (WTC). One of the biggest talking points is the possible return of a Test series between India and Pakistan.

At the same time, ICC officials are also expected to discuss major changes to the World Test Championship (WTC).

The Board meeting will take place in Ahmedabad on May 30 and 31 during the final weekend of IPL 2026.  Before that, the ICC’s Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) will hold a virtual meeting on May 21. These meetings are part of the ICC’s regular planning process, where cricket officials discuss the future of the game.

PCB Chairman Likely To Join Meeting Virtually

However, there is still uncertainty over whether Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi will attend the meeting in person.

Due to the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, his travel plans remain unclear. Therefore, there is a strong possibility that he may join the meeting virtually instead of travelling to India.

ICC Meetings Scheduled This Month

Before the Board meeting, the ICC’s Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) will hold a virtual meeting. Earlier, the sessions were expected to be held in Doha, Qatar. Later, the plans changed due to the ongoing situation in West Asia.

Meanwhile, Officials are hoping the discussions will help shape the future of Test cricket, although a final decision may still take some time. Another important ICC gathering is expected in July during the annual general meeting in Edinburgh after the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Roger Twose Group Working On New Ideas

It is important to note that the International board had formed a special working group last year under former New Zealand batter Roger Twose. The group was given the responsibility of suggesting improvements for the WTC structure.

One of the biggest recommendations involves expanding the tournament from nine teams to 12 teams. If approved, countries such as Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan may become part of the championship in future cycles.

IND vs PAK Test Series On The Cards?

If this plan gets approval, Test cricket could become more competitive and inclusive. At the same time, fans are most excited about the possibility of India and Pakistan facing each other again in a Test series.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently stated that Pakistan is willing to play Test cricket against all nations, including India, in future ICC tours.

"We will play Tests against all member boards in the next FTP," Mohsin Naqvi said after a bilateral meeting with BCB in Dhaka.

Notably, India and Pakistan last played a Test series during Pakistan’s tour of India in the 2007-08 season.Since then, political and bilateral tensions have stopped both nations from playing Test cricket against each other for more than 18 years.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, the upcoming meetings could play an important role in shaping the future of Test cricket.

One-Test Series Proposal Under Discussion

Another major proposal focuses on one-Test series. At present, every WTC series must contain at least two Test matches. Teams also play three home and three away series across a two-year cycle.

However, some officials feel one-Test series could help smaller cricket boards manage travel, costs, and scheduling in a better way. In addition, more teams may get opportunities to play regular Test cricket through a shorter format.

On the other hand, several experts still believe longer Test series provide a stronger measure of a team’s performance and consistency. Therefore, ICC members are expected to examine the proposal carefully before making any final move.

The WTC is currently in its fourth cycle, and reports suggest the present structure could remain in place for the 2027–29 cycle as well. The current FTP will end next March, while the next WTC final is scheduled to take place in England in June 2027.
