In a significant development, the Indian team could face a major setback as reports suggest that a proposed T20I series against Sri Lanka may be cancelled at the last minute.

This development comes at a time when Team India already has a packed international schedule and is preparing for important assignments in the coming months.

Planned India vs Sri Lanka Tour Faces Uncertainty

Initially, Sri Lanka were expected to host the Men in Blue for a two-match Test series and a three-match T20I series in August.

The discussions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket had progressed because there was a vacant window in India’s calendar after the Zimbabwe tour.

It is important to note that the Men in Blue are scheduled to play a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe from July 23 to July 26, 2026.

After that, the Men in Blue have a free month before hosting West Indies in a white-ball series starting from September 27. Therefore, adding extra matches against Sri Lanka appeared to be a suitable option.

IND vs SL T20I Series Likely To Be Dropped

However, Cricbuzz's recent reports indicate that the three-match T20I series is now unlikely to take place. Although both cricket boards had considered the proposal, the additional matches seem difficult to fit into India’s already crowded schedule.

Furthermore, the official schedule for the IND vs SL tour has not yet been announced.

What Can Be The Reason Behind The Move?

One of the main reasons behind the possible cancellation is India’s demanding cricket calendar. The team is involved in multiple international commitments, making it difficult to accommodate additional matches.

Moreover, the proposed T20I series had a special purpose. It was originally planned as a fundraising initiative to support victims affected by the devastating Cyclone Ditwah that struck Sri Lanka last November.

India To Play Tests Against Sri Lanka

While the T20I series remains uncertain, the two-match Test series is expected to be played between August 15 and August 27. These matches are particularly important because they form part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27 cycle).

As things currently stand, India are placed sixth in the WTC standings. The team has recorded four victories, suffered four defeats, and drawn one match. Therefore, the upcoming Tests against Sri Lanka could play a significant role in improving India’s position in the table.

Sri Lanka Eye Strong WTC Campaign

On the other hand, Sri Lanka have made a solid start to their WTC campaign. They have played two Test matches, winning one against Bangladesh and drawing the other. As a result, they currently occupy third place in the standings with a points percentage of 66.67.

Consequently, a successful series against the Men in Blue would greatly strengthen Sri Lanka’s chances of finishing among the top teams and potentially reaching the WTC 2027 Final.
