The Proteas curse and the heartbreaking terms of being ‘chokers’ have haunted South Africa for a long time. Kevin Pietersen, an England veteran have now urged Heinrich Klaasen, who has taken retirement from international cricket, to reverse his decision and come back to play for his team after a marvellous IPL 2026 turnaround.
Heinrich Klaasen has found his rhythm with a solid IPL 2026 season, where he has been consistent with the bat and is also pretty much explosive in the T20 sense of the game. Urging his reinstatement in the South African cricket team, Pietersen requested a reversal of his retirement ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
When And Why Did Heinrich Klaasen Take Retirement?
Heinrich Klassen announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on June 2, 2025. He played his last international match against New Zealand back in March, when South Africa faced the BlackCaps in the Champions Trophy semifinal.
Klassen's decision to retire from all formats of international cricket came after his departure from Test cricket in January 2024, as he wanted to focus on shorter formats.
However, later driven by personal priorities and the shifting landscape of professional cricket, Klassen chose to focus fully on global T20 leagues like the IPL, SA20, and Major League Cricket.

Notably, Heinrich Klaasen was also eliminated from the central contract list of South Africa in April 2025, which might have been a trigger for his exit. The internal turmoil with CSA and the nonchalant attitude of Klassen towards his nation led to his retirement, where the veteran played four Test matches, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is for his country.
Kevin Pietersen Urges Klaasen To Come Back
Reversal of retirement decisions is not very rare. There have been multiple instances when cricketers have reversed their decisions of retirement to come back to international cricket, and former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has also vouched for this approach for Heinrich Klassen, especially for the 2027 World Cup.
The World Cup next year is set to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia between October and November 2027. Adding to the occasion of hosting at home, Pietersen urged Klassen to ask Cricket South Africa whether he can rejoin international cricket to be a major figure in the team’s revival.
“South Africa have never won a cricket world cup! There should be a phone call this morning, from the South African cricket board, to Heinrich Klaasen, to ask him if he can rejoin international cricket and be a central figure in their campaign to try and win their first ever World Cup, which will be in South Africa next year,” Pietersen wrote on his X handle.
Why Proteas Are Called The 'Chokers'?
South Africa has been dubbed "chokers" because of their landslide losses in tournament semifinals and finals.
In tournament finals, although the Proteas have a good record and win percentage with 18 wins from 31 tournament finals, they have played across the three formats; their tournament semifinal record reveals a worrisome fact.
From the 16 tournament semifinals the team has played across formats, they have managed to win only two, which highlights their shortcomings in crunch situations.
Heinrich Klaasen In Terrific Form In IPL 2026
Speaking of Klassen, who led the chase of Sunrisers Hyderabad against Mumbai Indians with his middle-order blitz of 31 off 65 on April 29, he could be a major figure in reviving South Africa's campaign in the 2027 World Cup.
Throughout the IPL, Klassen has played nine matches, from which he has garnered 414 runs at an average of 59.14 while striking at 157.41. He also already has four half-centuries in the process, while being a stable and reliable contributor with the bat for the Hyderabad team.
