Mumbai Indians’ campaign this IPL 2026 season went from bad to worse following their crushing defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday, April 29. Defending 244 in front of their home crowd at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians bowlers failed to contain SRH’s rampage, largely influenced by Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen.

The franchise was already facing an uphill task to keep their playoffs ambitions alive, especially after suffering a 103-run larruping at the hands of CSK last week. The latest outcome against the ‘Orange Army’ now has further complicated their qualification equation, leaving them with little margin for error in the business end of the league stage.

As Hardik Pandya and co. navigate the second half of the tournament, here is a look at their entire scenario for securing a top four finish on the IPL 2026 points table before the knockouts.

How can Mumbai Indians qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?

The Mumbai Indians franchise, under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, started off the IPL 2026 season with a comprehensive win over KKR last month. Little would anyone have predicted that the celebrated franchise would manage just one more win over the course of their next seven games.

Having suffered six defeats in eight matches, including four on a trot, the Hardik Pandya-led side is currently placed at number nine on the IPL 2026 points table. With just four points, the franchise is also holding a dismal NRR of -0.784, one of the worst among all sides this tournament.

Despite finding themselves languishing at ninth position on the 10-team standings, the Mumbai Indians franchise is still mathematically alive in the season’s playoffs race.

In a bid to make it to the top four before the playoffs, the team needs to win each of its remaining six matches to get to 16 points. A tally of 16 points has so far proven enough for all sides in qualifying for the IPL playoffs since the tournament became a 74-match event in 2022.

Mumbai Indians can also qualify for the next round by winning five of their remaining six games. However, such a scenario will not guarantee any automatic qualification, as the franchise would have to heavily rely on exterior results.

Moreover, only one team has so far qualified for an IPL playoff with a tally of just 14 points in a 74-match season, with RCB doing so back in IPL 2024.

What are Mumbai Indians’ remaining games of IPL 2026?

As per the IPL 2026 schedule, the Mumbai Indians franchise still has six matches remaining in the tournament. The team will play two of those matches at their home ground in Mumbai.

Mumbai Indians top-performers of IPL 2026 thus far

Not a single Mumbai Indians batter features among the 10 leading run-scorers of the IPL 2026 season, at least so far. Moreover, the most successful Mumbai Indians batter this season has turned out to be Ryan Rickelton, who is ranked 17th on the batting charts with 260 runs to his name in six innings at an average of 52.

The next best batter is Tilak Varma, who is ranked way down below at number 32 with 188 runs in eight innings at a below-par average of 26.85.

The situation seems to be even more dire for them in the bowling department, especially with their champion fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya experiencing an underwhelming tournament.

Afghanistan import AM Ghazanfar has taken the most wickets among all Mumbai Indians bowlers this IPL 2026 season with 10 sticks from six innings.
