Glenn Maxwell has chosen loyalty over money, committing his future to the Melbourne Stars in a significant development coming from the BBL. The veteran all-rounder has re-signed for two more seasons, ensuring stability and experience for a franchise still chasing its first title.

The decision comes at a crucial time, just before the BBL’s contracting fiasco and player movement window. With rival clubs doing rounds and putting attractive offers on the table, Glenn Maxwell’s recommitment stands out as a strong statement of belief in the Melbourne Stars’ long-term vision.

For a side known as perennial underachievers, Maxwell staying in the side brings hope. Despite another disappointing finish in the latest edition, the Stars retained their most iconic player, banking on his experience, leadership, and match-winning ability to finally turn promise into silverware.

Glenn Maxwell commits to Melbourne Stars for two more seasons

Glenn Maxwell has re-signed with the Melbourne Stars for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons, alongside young talent Campbell Kellaway. The move keeps the Stars’ core intact ahead of a busy player movement period where teams can trade players and draft picks.

The all-rounder has been representing the Melbourne Stars since the 2012-13 season. Across 13 BBL seasons, Maxwell has scored 3,193 runs for the franchise, second only to Marcus Stoinis, averaging 35.08 at a strike-rate of 155.37, including two centuries and 21 half-centuries.

Despite a poor 2025-26 campaign, where he scored just 76 runs in eight innings, Maxwell remains committed to his home-state franchise. His decision reflects a desire to finish unfinished business and help Melbourne Stars chase their elusive maiden BBL title.

Sydney Thunder miss out on Maxwell despite aggressive push

Glenn Maxwell’s call was far from straightforward, with Sydney Thunder making a strong push to take him away from the Victoria based franchise. The Thunder, who finished last on the points table this season, identified Maxwell as a marquee signing to fast-track their rebuild.

Thunder have already re-signed David Warner, who finished as the leading run-scorer in the league stage, and were hopeful of pairing him with Maxwell. The combination promised experience, star power, and leadership for a side desperate to bounce back strongly.

However, Maxwell turned down the big offer, backing his belief in staying home. As he said recently in SEN, moving players away from their home franchises is never easy, pointing to successful teams like Perth Scorchers built around strong local cores.

Melbourne Stars back Maxwell as key figure to lift their maiden BBL title

Even at 37, Maxwell remains a priceless T20 asset. With nearly 11,000 T20 runs, 196 wickets with his off-spin, and elite fielding, he brings value beyond numbers. His decision to retire from ODI cricket underlines his focus on the shortest format.

As Australia prepares for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell will be a senior figure in the squad. For the Stars, his loyalty offers belief, experience, and all-round luxury as they continue to chase their maiden Big Bash glory.
