Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been the centre of attraction in the ongoing tri-nation series featuring Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A for all the wrong reasons. There were a ton of expectations for the youngster when he was picked for the A tour of Sri Lanka, but so far, things have not gone according to plan.

In three matches played so far, the southpaw has yet to leave a mark with the bat, and apart from his poor batting performances, the 1§-year-old teenager has been in the limelight after his ugly fight with the Sri Lankan players in the last game.

After the India vs Sri Lanka A match, Sooryavanshi was involved in a heated exchange as tensions escalated between the two sides.

What happened between Sooryavanshi and Sri Lankan players

In the India vs Sri Lanka tri-series match, the Indian side posted a healthy 265 on the board, and the total was expected to be a challenging score for the hosts. However, the Lankan Lions managed to score the exact same runs as the match went down to the Super Over.

In the Super Over, the hosts prevailed as Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge couldn’t finish off the chase. After the win, the hosts had an animated celebration which triggered the fight.

One of the Sri Lankan A players hurled abuse at the Indian opener as the two players were involved in a heated altercation, and they had to be separated. Sooryavanshi was criticised for his behaviour as many felt it was unacceptable on his part.

Sairaj Bahutale breaks silence on Sooryavanshi's fight

With the India A players taking part in the tri-series in Sri Lanka, the senior side will play in the second ODI against Afghanistan on Wednesday afternoon. Ahead of the match, the team’s spin-bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutale, attended the pre-game presser, and he was asked about the Sooryavanshi situation.

Bahutale, a part of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching management, gave his verdict on the ugly fight that transpired in Sri Lanka.

"It was unfortunate, but I'm sure there are experienced coaches there who will explain things to him (Vaibhav). I think the Sri Lankan players should also be educated in terms of how we need to behave, and the same goes for us."

The Sri Lankan players also crossed the line, as the hosts have been advised not to repeat the same mistake again.

Sooryavanshi's poor tri-series tournament

After an outstanding IPL 2026 season, where the 15-year-old finished as the leading run-scorer, the Rajasthan Royals opener was picked in the India team for the T20Is vs Ireland, and England. Moreover, he was also roped in the A team for the ongoing tour.

He started the tournament with a low score of just 14 against Sri Lanka A in the tournament opener. It was followed by a quickfire 44 off 22 balls against the Afghanistan A, but the knock went in vain as the Afghans won the match.

In the third match against Sri Lanka A, Sooryavanshi once again failed to deliver the goods as he scored just 21 runs before the Sri Lankan bowler trapped him in their web, and the opener departed without much of a trouble.
