In a shocking revelation, India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav's days as the national team's captain might be over. As per recent developments, Gautam Gambhir and the national selection committee are considering his place in the playing XI purely as a batter, as he might not make the cut due to his recent performances in the shortest format of the game.
However, although the Board of Control for Cricket in India selection panel is reportedly in favour of removing Suryakumar Yadav, Gautam Gambhir's relationship with SKY cannot be completely ignored, as it has been integral to the dressing room environment built over the years after winning multiple ICC and ACC trophies.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Massive Dip In Form
Speaking about Suryakumar's form, he has not been at his very best since the Asia Cup 2025. Although he led his team to the trophy, he averaged only 18 per game across the six matches he played.
In the India vs Australia series following the Asia Cup, SKY managed to score only 84 runs from four matches. The T20 World Cup 2026 also saw a disappointing campaign, in which Yadav scored 242 runs from nine innings, averaging 30.25 at a poor strike rate of 136.72.
His dip in performance has become a major talking point among selectors and cricket pundits, and his continued poor form in IPL 2026 is also a concern that might even jeopardise his chances of playing in the Olympics 2028 and the World Cup in the same year.
For the unaware, Suryakumar Yadav played 12 matches, scoring 210 runs at an average of 17.50 and a strike rate of 148.94 for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026.

SKY To Be Sacked As India T20I Captain?
For almost a year now, Suryakumar's place in the Indian cricket team has remained under heavy scrutiny, with all five selectors reportedly against his inclusion in the playing XI, as reported by The Economic Times.
Although he has led his team to multiple victories and has a solid track record as a T20 captain, it is understood that the selectors are now looking at the future of Indian cricket from a broader perspective instead of focusing on a single tournament.
"Initially the selectors thought that IPL would help Suryakumar regain form like last edition when he crossed 700 runs. But strangely there hasn't been any technical course correction in his game.
"Even the rookiest of pacers are just bowling straight hard lengths and he has no answer. Selectors don't see him playing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It is as simple as that," a senior BCCI source told PTI.
Although the final call might ultimately rest with Gautam Gambhir himself, and despite the warm relationship shared by Gambhir and SKY, it is still possible that Suryakumar Yadav could face the axe soon.
Potential Successors Of SKY
However, any setback could accelerate the transition, with successors like Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma ready to gradually fill the void created by India's Mr. 360.
"Don't rule out Tilak if Surya is sacked. There's a reason that Tilak has been made captain for tri-nation A series where selectors would get to see his leadership skills," the source added.
As of now, Indian cricket stands at a crossroads, with future planning and power dynamics currently shifting during this transition phase under Gambhir's leadership.
Although the statistics do not favour Suryakumar, Gautam Gambhir's loyalty and relationship with him might still shape the future of India's T20 captaincy.
