Ahead of the Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals clash, Mahela Jayawardene, head coach of the Mumbai Indians, gave an important update on India veteran Rohit Sharma, the star opener of the five-time IPL title winners.

While Rohit Sharma had been injured and was ruled out for almost three weeks in the middle of the tournament, Mahela Jayawardene's recent confirmation regarding Sharma's fitness and health has eliminated any concerns moving forward to the 2027 World Cup.

MI Head Coach Shares Update On Rohit Sharma’s Fitness

Mahela Jayawardene insisted that Rohit is fully fit to play Mumbai Indians' last group-stage fixture against Rajasthan Royals, both as a fielder as well as a batter.

However, his continued use as an impact substitute is now more of a team combination call rather than an attempt to save Rohit from extra burden on the field due to his injury-laden IPL 2026 campaign.

Rohit had limited fielding involvement, which left questions hanging over his head about whether he was still being physically protected. However, Jayawardene's statement now clears the lingering concern, with no physical limitations for Rohit existing.

Jayawardene Clears Impact Sub Role For Rohit Sharma

For the unaware, Rohit has been playing as an impact substitute for most of his games in the tournament. Although he was initially managed for the hamstring injury he suffered, the recent games have been more about team planning than MI being too cautious with their star hitman.

“According to me, according to our medical team, Rohit is 100%. After coming back from the hamstring injury, first game we were a bit cautious. Now he is playing as an Impact Sub just for the team combination when we are bowling. He is a team player; he perfectly understands it,” Jayawardene said.

MI’s Woeful Campaign In IPL 2026

Nevertheless, this clarification is now already too late for Mumbai, where their season has already been defined by a series of poor performances.

While Rohit's hamstring was one of the troubles, MI also had other setbacks and injuries to key players throughout their campaign, and that instability affected them both in their selection and their rhythm.

Rohit Sharma’s Sub-Par Season

Meanwhile, Rohit's IPL 2026 season too hasn't been super impressive. From the eight matches he has played so far, he has gathered 283 runs at an average of 35.38 and a strike rate of 160.80, which is far from his reputation as a solid hitter of the ball from the onset.

His only significant scores came against LSG and Kolkata Knight Riders, where he bagged 84 and 78 runs respectively. This worrisome form has now also cast a long shadow over his 2027 World Cup selection criteria, too.

Rohit’s 2027 ODI World Cup Chances Uncertain

Although the Mumbai Indians are comfortable benching Sharma for the fielding session, his presence on the field would have impacted his availability for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Selectors are currently mulling over choosing Virat Kohli and not Rohit Sharma for the World Cup because of his fitness.

Rohit's sloppy form with the bat and his not-so-crisp athleticism on the field, along with his absence from Mumbai games, have further diminished his chances in the eyes of Ajit Agarkar and Co.

Nevertheless, Rohit will have opportunities, as India will play a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan starting in June, followed by multiple overseas series that will see Rohit try to prove his fitness and athleticism to secure a spot in the 2027 mega ICC tournament.
