Multan Region opener Imam-ul-Haq had a serious failure against Abbottabad Region during a recent clash of the Pakistan National T20 Cup. He was dismissed on just 1 run by another star all-rounder, Shadab Khan.

Imam was not only the opener but also the captain of Multan, and hence, his failure proved to be a huge blow in his team’s first inning. They failed to build partnerships and faced a mini-collapse.

Imam-ul-Haq fails to impress Pakistan selectors

At a time when Pakistan’s T20I and ODI teams are getting revamped after the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 debacle, players like Imam-ul-Haq, who have been waiting for their chance on the sidelines, were expected to step up.

During the National T20 Cup clash between Multan Region and Abbottabad Region, captain Imam opened alongside Mohammad Nadeem in the first inning.

However, in the very second over, Imam ended up throwing his wicket away. Shadab Khan bowled over the wicket and targeted the off-stump line. It was a hard length ball, and Imam-ul-Haq tried to charge down the pitch.

His intention was to hit a big shot over the cover region. But because the ball was shorter than expected, the bat swing missed the ball completely.

As a result, the ball went past the bat and clipped the top of the off stump, thus sending Imam back to the pavilion on just 1 run off 2 balls. Just like that, Multan Region lost their second wicket and slipped to 16/2 in 2.1 overs.

When did Imam-ul-Haq last play for Pakistan?

Imam-ul-Haq has been dropped from Pakistan’s national side for a long while now. He last featured in a Test match against South Africa in October 2025.

As for the ODIs, Imam’s last game in that format was in April 2025 against New Zealand. Not only that, but Imam-ul-Haq hasn’t played a single T20I since 2019.

As a result, this National T20 Cup was a brilliant opportunity for him to make a comeback. However, with such failures, he is only closing the door to his comeback harder.

That being said, as far as Shabad Khan is concerned, the wicket of Imam-ul-Haq was a confidence booster. He is also coming off a failed T20 World Cup campaign for Pakistan.

This tournament will help him not only to ace his all-round skills but also to prove his mettle.

Pakistan National T20 Cup to run till March 18

The National T20 Cup 2026 is Pakistan’s major domestic T20 tournament, featuring regional teams from across the country. It runs from March 7 to March 18, 2026, with league matches followed by knockouts.

8 teams will play multiple matches against different regions, and all games are scheduled daily. The top 4 teams in the points table advance.

This tournament is important because it is a talent pipeline for the PSL and the Pakistan national team. Also, young players perform here to earn PSL contracts.
