England’s Test squad has faced repeated off-field controversies over the past eight months. From drinking problems to physical altercations to late-night club outings, the team has been through consistent scrutiny.

For instance, a nightclub controversy pushed former captain Ben Stokes to a tipping point as he announced his international retirement midway through the New Zealand series. 

Since then, veteran batter Joe Root has taken over as captain of England’s Test team, and he is apparently hell-bent on bringing a culture change.

Josh Tongue reveals Joe Root’s dressing room speech

Against this backdrop, captain Joe Root held what Josh Tongue described as a “robust conversation” with the squad at Lord’s ahead of the second Test against Pakistan.

Root reportedly reminded the players that wearing the England shirt is a privilege and that they have a responsibility to conduct themselves professionally. 

"It was a chat that was needed, a very good chat from Rooty. He was very clear on the message of what it’s like to be an England cricketer. We’re very privileged to put on that England shirt and we want to show kids growing up how good it is to play for England in front of thousands of people," Tongue told media.

He said Root was very clear about what was expected from an England cricketer and that the squad needed to leave past incidents behind and move forward. 

"He was honest with us all in the changing room. He said it straight. What has happened in the past is the past, and we need to try to move on from that," he added.

Joe Root take action after Brydon Carse controversy

Interestingly, after taking charge as captain, Joe Root abolished the policy that banned England cricketers from going out to clubs post midnight. He believed that every player is an adult and understands his responsibility.

However, his belief went for a toss when Brydon Carse was spotted with handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby. The ECB took the matter seriously and launched an investigation.

This incident led to criticism of Root’s leadership. Hence, he gave a speech in the dressing room to remind his teammates of the concept of integrity, professionalism and ethics.

England doomed by problematic culture

England cricket's relationship with alcohol has been under scrutiny for years. Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse and many other names were caught causing a nuisance on multiple occasions. 

So the argument isn't that one night out equals an alcohol problem. It is that repeated incidents have forced English cricket to question whether an old relationship with drinking is compatible with the standards expected of modern international athletes.

But England's problem may not simply be alcohol. It is the collision between an old cricket culture and a modern professional sporting environment. Players are adults and obviously can socialise. 

The issue arises when nights out repeatedly result in curfew breaches, police incidents, disciplinary investigations or reputational damage. And that's precisely what Root said. He isn't necessarily trying to ban players from drinking. 

He is trying to make them understand that wearing the England shirt carries responsibility even when they're away from the cricket field. But will his words yield any results? Only time will tell.
