The former England captain is understood to be exploring opportunities across major T20 leagues, with the Big Bash League reportedly on his immediate horizon. However, while retirement has freed him from England duties, it has not completely removed the ECB from the equation. His plans for the Pakistan Super League and Major League Cricket could now face a significant hurdle due to a recent revelation.Ben Stokes' Durham stint acts as roadblock for overseas stintsStokes' association with Durham could prove to be the biggest obstacle to his plans to expand his franchise-cricket career. Although his central contract with the ECB will be cancelled at the end of September following his international retirement in June, he remains registered with Durham, meaning the ECB's NOC regulations can still affect where he plays overseas.The former England captain is understood to have held discussions with franchises in both the United States' Major League Cricket (MLC) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) about playing next season. However, as per The Guardian, the ECB is reportedly reluctant to grant him the required No-Objection Certificate (NOC) while he remains tied to the county.Ben Stokes' priority is also understood to be helping Durham compete for the County Championship after playing an important role in their promotion from Division Two this summer. That domestic commitment could therefore clash with his ambitions overseas.The issue is particularly relevant for MLC, which has been provisionally scheduled for June and July next year. Under the ECB's updated regulations, published in November 2024, the governing body can reject an NOC request from a player who is not England-contracted but remains registered with a domestic county.The rules state that an NOC can be rejected if an overseas tournament “is scheduled to take place (in part or in full) during the season,” or if granting clearance “may compromise the predictability, stability and consistency of the ECB competitions”.That gives the ECB considerable influence over Ben Stokes' franchise plans despite his retirement from international cricket.The policy was primarily introduced to prevent young county players from leaving domestic cricket for overseas franchise leagues. However, the ECB has previously refused NOC requests from retired England players as well.No maiden PSL stint for Ben Stokes even after international retirement?The PSL could be an even more complicated proposition for Stokes if its 2027 window overlaps with the English domestic season. That would leave Stokes facing a strange situation. Retirement from international cricket has opened the door to franchise cricket, but his county registration could keep one of the biggest T20 leagues out of reach.MLC faces a similar NOC hurdle because of its provisional June-July window. However, the IPL is a different case. The ECB's policy specifically makes an exception for the Indian Premier League, where Stokes earlier represented CSK and Rajasthan Royals, meaning its overlap with county cricket does not automatically put Stokes in the same position as the PSL or MLC.As of now, Ben Stokes' expected BBL involvement could mark the beginning of his post-international franchise journey.
