BCCI likely to replace existing tournament [Source: AFP]
The BCCI is known for being proactive in the development of domestic talent from all over the country, with a well-structured calendar for both age-group and senior cricket. Over 2000 domestic matches are organised by the board with 38 state associations involved.
Amidst the ongoing IPL 2026 season, the BCCI is now reportedly looking to make some tweaks in the existing calendar to improve the white-ball game of young and budding cricketers in the nation. This could ensure the quick development of the youngsters, helping them transition from the age-group cricket to stages like IPL easily.
BCCI to announce new tournament in the middle of IPL 2026
As we head towards the closing stages of the IPL 2026 league phase, with the teams eyeing the final four in high-intensity matches, the BCCI is said to be contemplating scrapping a U23 tournament.
According to TOI, the board could replace the U23 One Day tournament, i.e., Men’s U23 State A Trophy, with a T20 tournament from the upcoming season. Currently, there are two U23 tournaments in place, which are the Col. C.K Nayudu Trophy, which is a four-day, red-ball tournament and the One Day Trophy.

At the earlier levels of the age-group cricket as well, there is no T20 competition for the budding cricketers. They mainly focus on longer formats with multi-day (red-ball) and fifty-over cricket.
Why is BCCI replacing Men’s U23 State A Trophy?
In recent years, especially post 2020, T20 cricket has taken a massive prominence around the world. Apart from Test Cricket, T20I is the go-to white-ball format, with ODIs taking a back seat
Additionally, T20 cricket has also been included in the Los Angeles Olympic Games 2028, taking it a step towards globalisation of the sport.
Considering how the format is growing, the grassroots development of the players in that mould is a must and currently, apart from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which is a senior (open-age) T20 domestic tournament in India, there is no T20 competition in the domestic structure.
With minimal ODI cricket being played at the moment, it is a logical step to convert the Men’s State A Trophy into a T20 format. However, it also puts the future of ODIs in grave danger, considering the most prominent modern-day stars, including the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have etched their names in history books, predominantly playing ODIs.
U23 T20 tournament to bridge the gap between domestic cricket and IPL
Every year, we see a plethora of young talent emerging in the IPL, including the U19 and U23 teenagers getting picked in the marquee franchise tournament. However, not everyone gets a nod from the get-go in the IPL and has to warm the bench for long times. Additionally, considering the senior talent in the state teams, they have to wait for the chances in SMAT as well.
What a U23 T20 competition would do is help the players mould their game to T20 cricket, while also continuing to play multi-day cricket in the red-ball season. They will not have to wait for a senior state player to make a way for them to get game time and feel the extreme pressure of being put directly into an IPL XI.
This will also help the T20 leagues organised by the state associations to scout talent more quickly.
