Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves in troubled waters for using one of their BCCI-contracted players in the IPL 2026 despite injury. Led by Ajinkya Rahane, KKR are fighting to get an entry into the IPL playoffs, having lost six of their twelve group-stage matches.

Apart from skipper Rahane's poor form, another factor that has derailed the Knight Riders' IPL 2026 campaign is injury to their key players.

While Matheesha Pathirana lasted just eight balls, a prolific performer of Varun Chakaravarthy's calibre has missed several games amid his struggles with a hairline fracture.

Varun Chakaravarthy returned to KKR XI vs Gujarat Titans despite injury

Veteran Indian bowler Varun Chakaravarthy had a dismal start to the IPL 2026 season. The right-arm spinner went wicketless in his first three outings before bouncing back with impactful spells against Rajasthan Royals, SRH, LSG and Gujarat Titans.

In fact, Varun Chakaravarthy sustained a hairline fracture to his left toe, getting sidelined from the KKR playing XI on three occasions.

While the team officials remained tight-lipped on his fitness status, Chakaravarthy's return to the XI for the crucial fixture against GT raised eyebrows, given the fact that hairline fractures need plenty of time to heal.

The Knight Riders made him bowl his full quota of overs, thereby drawing the attention of the BCCI. The toe injury adversely affected Varun's performance in the game, as he failed to scalp a wicket while conceding 47 runs in four overs.

BCCI unhappy with KKR overusing Varun Chakaravarthy

Since making a comeback to the Indian team, Varun Chakaravarthy has been an integral member of the white-ball squads.

He played a significant role in the Men in Blue's clinical Champions Trophy triumph last year, while also emerging as their wrecker-in-chief in the middle overs in the T20 World Cup 2026 on home soil.

Considering India will begin their preparations for the 2027 World Cup with the upcoming Afghanistan series, the BCCI surely wants all the first-choice players to remain fit and available for the upcoming ODI assignments.

Chakaravarthy is a potential asset for the Indian team management, headed by Gautam Gambhir, from the 2027 World Cup's perspective, as his accuracy and variations could be handy on South African pitches.

So, the fact that KKR are blatantly mismanaging his workload ahead of a packed cricketing season has miffed the BCCI decision-makers.

According to a PTI report, the BCCI has expressed dissatisfaction over Chakaravarthy's injury management, with its medical team set to make the final call on the injured spinner's further participation in the IPL.

“I know for a fact that KKR physio is in touch with Team India physio [Kamlesh Jain]. There has been a communication from KKR to BCCI that in a previous match, Varun injured his left foot while saving a boundary. It is understood that he has a hairline fracture. I believe as a centrally contracted player of the BCCI, his fitness is paramount and the BCCI medical team could intervene. Jain might be asked as to what was the input from the KKR medical team," the PTI report stated.

How has Varun Chakaravarthy been an asset for Gautam Gambhir's India?

Varun Chakaravarthy definitely made his debut under Virat Kohli's captaincy; however, Gautam Gambhir played a key role in his comeback to the team after the BCCI appointed him as India's head coach.

The former KKR captain brought Chakaravarthy back and used him as a potent weapon in the Champions Trophy, where the spinner bagged nine wickets in just three innings.

He further went on to scalp seven wickets during India's victorious Asia Cup campaign, eventually starring in the T20 World Cup with 14 wickets.

Thus, he has been a key member of Gautam Gambhir's team, and the Men in Blue will definitely want him fully fit for their ODI fixtures leading to the World Cup next year.
