The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formed a special independent committee. The primary objective of the said committee is to address complaints of sexual harassment and to create a safe environment for female Bangladesh cricketers.

BCB’s complaint committee secretary Chandra Banerjee has stated that the board has started the committee with four members, and a fifth member will be included soon.

Special committee formed without BCB personnel

As confirmed by Chandra Banerjee while speaking with Cricbuzz, Barrister Rashna Imam will head the five-member special committee, meant to address the sexual harassment complaints from Bangladesh Women cricketers in the country. The committee itself is set up in line with a 2009 High Court directive.

It is worth noting that Rashna is also a member of the convening committee led by Tamim Iqbal.

Apart from Rashna Imam, the other committee members include Barrister Nazia Kabir, Barrister Anita Gazi Rahman and Zarin Mahmud Hossain. While the fifth member of the committee is yet to be named, it is understood that the member will be a former Bangladesh cricketer.

A report also indicates that the committee is deliberately formed without any BCB personnel, in a bid to shield investigations from internal influence and to avoid conflicts of interest.

BCB has zero tolerance towards sexual harassment, says Chandra

Chandra Banerjee said that forming this special independent committee is the first step taken by the BCB to tackle and address sexual harassment complaints. Chandra added that the board has already circulated this objective in the women’s wing of Bangladesh cricket.

The BCB complaint committee secretary said, “BCB has zero tolerance towards any kind of abuse, sexual harassment or whatever. To implement this, we have specified nicely within the policy where to reach out. This is step one. The second thing is that this has already been circulated in the women's wing.”

Notably, not long ago, the BCB and Bangladesh Cricket was struck with an explosive claim from Bangladesh Women cricketer Jahanara Alam.

While living in Australia, Jahanara accused several officials in the BCB women’s department of sexual harassment. She also claimed that Bangladesh Women captain Nigar Sultana had physically assaulted her.

The formation of the committee comes in the wake of Jahanara Alam's allegations, with the move expected to provide Bangladesh women cricketers with an independent platform to report harassment and seek appropriate action.
