The Indian cricket market has grown leaps and bounds over the past decade and a half, especially since the time IPL came onto the fore. While the interest in the sport has always been there in the country, how BCCI has regulated it and cracked the code of earning big profits has been a learning for the other boards in the world.

Cricket Australia, who have been open to various innovations with the Big Bash League over the years are now learnt to be contemplating playing the big opening match in India. It is also said that the board could also put a couple of its teams for sale, especially to get investments from the Indian franchises.

CA plans BBL opening match in India

The Big Bash League has been played in a double round-robin with a home and away format since 2011/12, when the league was formed. However, a change could be seen in the upcoming season, as according to SEN Radio, Cricket Australia has shown interest in playing their first match of the 2026/27 season in India — specifically Chennai.

The unprecedented event is said to be a part of a wider strategy to capitalise on the Indian market and have Indian franchises invest in BBL. At least a couple of franchises could be put on sale in the near future, as has been said for a long time.

IPL franchises in BBL?

As it is widely known, franchise cricket is in a boom and Indian franchise owners have been at the forefront of it. Despite having successfully and smoothly run teams in the IPL, the franchises have invested in leagues across the globe.

Every major league, like the SA20, CPL, ILT20 and the most recent addition to this, The Hundred have opened their doors for the Indian owners to buy a team. All these leagues have gained a lot of traction — both financial and emotional, with the fan attention, as they bring a lot of loyal supporters along with them.

The Cricket Australia chief has openly spoken about the losses they have faced in recent times, and an investment from Indian franchises could be a game-changer for them.

BBL opener in India could be a historic step

After IPL, the Australian league is the oldest active T20 competition going on, apart from the domestic ones. In recent times, the legendary Indian bowler has shown interest in exploring the chance of playing in the BBL and had also signed for them before getting injured.

A step like playing the first match of the season in India could open a gateway for more players who no longer play IPL to try out the Aussie league to elongate their T20 career. It would be beneficial for the league, with the eyeballs a player would bring.

They could also get more Indian sponsorship deals for the tournament like some teams got during the T20 World Cup 2026. Additionally, it will also strengthen the relationship between the BCCI and CA, which could be crucial for the growth of the sport in future.
