Bangladesh cricket was left shaken after young off-spinner Nayeem Hasan allegedly faced harassment by members of a law enforcement agency. The horrific incident took place in Chattogram yesterday while the youngster was heading towards his home from the airport.
On his way to his home, the officers stopped his CNG and harassed him unnecessarily. After being released by the police, Nayeem Hasan opened up about the disturbing incident and shared details of the ordeal.
Nayeem Hasan breaks silence after the incident
Bangladesh recently made headlines after securing its first-ever ODI series victory over Australia, but an unsettling incident soon put the nation in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Nayeem Hasan, the Bangladeshi off-spinner, was harassed late at night as he was heading towards his home.
Completing the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League game, Nayeem was on his way home when the fateful incident occurred near Lalkhan Bazar. As he was in a CNG auto rickshaw, the police stopped him and showcased unwanted aggression.
After being released, the cricketer broke his silence. Speaking to the media, he said that he had repeatedly asked the officers to check his bag, but instead, he was taken to another auto-rickshaw.
“My Premier League game was going on, my flight was delayed. I was coming from the airport through my CNG and at around 11:25 PM they (Police) stopped my CNG under the Lankan Bazar flyover and took the documents from the driver,” he said.
“I told the police, 'If necessary, you can check my bag' but they grabbed me by the throat and said 'Get in the car' and took me into their car,” he added.

Nayeem Hasan alleges physical abuse during the disturbing encounter
Adding to that, the young off-spinner brought a massive allegation against them. Speaking to reporters, Nayeem Hasan claimed that he was grabbed by the throat and later bitten during the heated faceoff.
“I said 'Why are you grabbing me by the throat' but they pushed me out. Then they grabbed me, beat me and abused me,” he said.
“I even told them that I am a national cricketer and represent the country in Test matches but they hardly bothered to listen and only when they got phone calls and were informed about me, did they change their attitude,” he added.
Chattogram DC promises action
Nayeem Hasan is a familiar name in Bangladesh’s domestic cricket circuit and has also represented the national team in Test cricket. In 14 Tests, he claimed 48 wickets with an outstanding economy rate of 3.09.
As the entire incident shocked the nation and the cricketer himself, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam assured that justice would be delivered. Speaking to the media, the DC said that the proper action will be taken against the accused.
“We can assure you that he (Nayeem) will get justice. We are investigating the matter, and whoever did it will be punished because we have zero tolerance in this regard, considering police have a protocol and they must maintain that because our image is involved with,” he said.
After an outstanding ODI series victory against Australia, Bangladesh is all set to be back in the longest format. The Tigers will take on Zimbabwe in a one-off Test on June 28, with Nayeem Hasan named as a key member of the 15-player squad.
